That's just oversimplifying it but it is based on the Threads/Twitter model, and was founded following Musk's takeover of Twitter; it's not as big as either Threads or Twitter, but it's a start and there's actually starting to see a larger overall migration of users from Twitter over to BlueSky, particularly of the left-leaning persuasion.

One thing I've noticed is that uploading gifs doesn't seem to work at the moment on BlueSky so that's a bit distressing, but I hope that'll be fixed in a future update.

Bluesky isn’t going to takeoff. Twitter has too much history and too many users.

Threads has a chance to be a viable secondary option. It’s not going to replace Twitter but with its Instagram integration, it already has a built-in user base. The users just have to use it.
