This might be a wild claim tbh but I imagine it's because of all the injury angles they did back in the 90s especially the Attitude Era and folks just want shit to be part of a story instead of accepting that wrestling doesn't work under the philosophy of making fans believe it's real, which is what injury angles were for.
Then again, it also didn't quite work out the way promoters wanted back then too, I.E. the cops threatening to arrest Jerry Jarrett, Jerry Lawler, and Eddie Gilbert if they didn't tell the crowd Lawler was okay after being run over by Gilbert.
