I have further discussion for this question but to start, @Barry Poppins how do you pronounce "Macedon" when referring to the ancient kingdom, not modern Macedonia?

Historically so yeah, but the debate is, do we use the historical pronunciation or do we accept that language changes over time and change with it. I think we should use historical pronunciation when talking about historical contexts myself.

But then my next question would be, why do I not say Julius Kaiser instead of "See-zar" lol

Another would be Cicero that we pronounce with the soft C as well, but was most likely called "kikero" and I just can't call him that lol

Cyrus the Great is more like Kyrush, that one I am good with going with usually. But yeah I just find it funny that even the people wanting to do original translations like myself can't bring themselves to do the most popular figures

Depends tbh, if I see the Greek spelling of it I'll refer to it by the ancient pronunciation.

Otherwise I'll use the Latin pronunciation.

Caesar is kind of similar but more when the mood strikes my fancy.

Caesar is a bit easier just bc the terms Kaiser and Czar lasted so long from him. I try to make an effort to do that one just bc the Greek pronunciation sounds cooler lol

Another note on that.

Gaius Julius Caesar was very likely pronounced as:

Guy-oos Yoolioos Kais-err.

I know this too because of the scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

"Idiot! In the Latin alphabet, Jehovah starts with an I-"

Some other name shenanigans too while I'm at it.

Jesus Christ was never his real name. Christ is of course a title handed down to him, which if I recall correctly stood for "He Redeems". Jesus is a Latin butchery of a Greek translation of a Hebrew word.

Our Christ's original name was, if we believe the Roman sources, Ieshusa, which translated from Greek was something along the lines of Yeshowah, and then translated from the Hebrew word Yeshua.

Yeshua properly translated from Hebrew to Latin is... Ioshuwa. Joshua is Christ's proper name.

The name shit goes on forever too, we've talked about Charlemagne before. I don't think anyone ever called him that to his face lol
