I don't want to get into the evolution of the parties too much, but I do think it sucks for people that identify as Democrats today to see how trash the history of that party truly is. I'd personally rename the party today since it's so far removed from its racist roots.

I know people hate today's GOP, but I can honestly say most generations in our history I sided with the Republicans party. Lincoln to W. Bush.

I'm not a MAGA guy, though, but I think his brand is dying out. A good chunk of his picks lost primaries recently.

Washington as a top 5 President of All-Time is kinda overplayed and while he set a lot of precedence for his position, I don't really think that all of that really makes him one of the best, just that he used his presidential power responsibly and made sure successors followed that standard.

When I think of Top 5 Presidents, I think people that fundamentally shook things up and managed to make life, at least somewhat, better for everyone around him.

Lincoln settles the Civil War and freed the slaves, both Roosevelts did impeccable things and were tour de forces of personality and perseverence, Grant's presidency, tho marred by controversy and corruption, was still great and attempted to change things for the Southern African Americans still suffering from the KKK's grasp.

Upon further reflection, I am deciding between Eisenhower and Madison. Eisenhower's greatest legacy to the United States is the National Interstate Highway System, which is a modern feat of engineering so astounding that even those glorious Romans would be fucking jealous of the road-making that Eisenhower implemented. However, his opinions on homosexuality, especially in the army, are not only disappointing but fucking disgusting.

You truly couldn't go wrong with Eisenhower. He was probably the first big civil rights Presidents since the death of reconstruction.

He was a WW2 veteran and hero that commanded the Allies to victories who knew his foreign policy and don't forget got us out of Korea.

Wilson screening the Birth of a Nation KKK trash in the White House has to be the biggest disgrace to that office.
I love silent films and D.W Griffith has made some truly great ones. It's a shame he is best known for that shit stain on history. Intolerance is a tragic apology and admittance of guilt to perpeuting suffering down another generation. The revival of the klan gets glossed over with a scatter bombing in the 50s and 60s and the Spike Lee movie type stuff, but people forget the interwar period. A politican in Indiana I believe who was in the klan in the 20s beat and sexually assaulted a woman, she got away, and died telling the police what happened to her. In Michigan, the black legion, an even more extreme offshoot, murdered politicians and helped fix baseball games via intimidation, burned down Catholic churches...agony.

Woodrow Wilson has a quote about how entering WW1 is a good idea because it'll be the war to end all wars. Might be the first man to ever get smarter after a massive stroke. My favorite president of all time is Jack Nicholson in Mars Attacks.

Actually, for a non meme answer here, and politics aside because they make me vomit, Lincoln is the president I relate to the most. To connect this to Griffith, he directed the best Lincoln biopic ever made, a hidden masterpiece. It is barely political, because that's the least important part of understanding Lincoln or his motivations. He was a tall, lanky, slightly hunched over despair magnet. Felt such inner turmoil that leading others in reality became low pressure. Walter Huston portrays the man for what he was...awkward, rapidly accepting death, lonely, pragmatic, carrying soul weight.

That guy actually has some decent videos.
Yeah, I love his videos, specifically this series and I even linked the tariffs one earlier in the thread, but didn't realize he had a new one about states rights.

It just feels like fate since we were chatting about states rights with Dak and right after before that I mentioned his videos.

It's a well thought out discussion between his two characters. More so than the usual dunkfest. Though, there's still dunking.
If you watch the series in chronological order, you can definitely tell that the character of Johnny Reb subtly becomes more willing to listen to Billy Yank's points. It's good stuff about how people can change their beliefs while still arguing against the opposite's side.

I think my favorite overall is his recontextualization of the Puritans of England and America. They are surprisingly more important to English and American history than some people realize.

An opportunity is now presented, if not to diminish at least to prevent, the growth of a sin which sits heavy on the souls of every one of us. By embracing this opportunity, we may retrieve the national character, and, in some degree our own. But if we suffer it to pass unimproved, let us at least be consistent, and declare that our Constitution was made to impose slavery, and not to establish liberty.

He showed this quote discussed in opposition to slavery's expansion as early as 1819 from a New Hampshire delegate. Makes me proud. :proud

I love when people even back then see the institution of slavery was seen a clear afront to the Constitution,

It should also be noted, a good chunk of the writers of the Constitution were also against slavery in 1787, but had to be negotiated into certain pro-slavery clauses to get southern states to ratify it, but they still put a clause in to allow outlawing expansion in 20 years, which they stuck to on the day the cause allowed them to.
