I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free.

Also way to completely forget that much of Lincoln's voting base were uh... White Supremacists, even by the standards of the day. So congrats, Dak, you unintendedly proved our point that Slavery was a huge deal to the Civil War.

What Lincoln writes in that Letter to Horace Greeley, is basically very similar to Obama's opinions on Gay Marriage during his 2008 Presidential Campaign. He stated he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, then later on during his first term came out and said he supported strong same-sex unions, and finally by the end of his second term, openly advocated for Same-Sex Marriage.

Are you telling me the President of the United States would sacrifice his own personal policy conscriptions to save the country? Shocking news....

That doesn't in any way negate that the Confederate States all state in their successions that slavery was the primary reason they did so.

That quote was also wildly taken out of context and doesn't take into account that despite winning a nomination for a relatively new political party, he had to say what he could to appease his constituents. Man had to play the game to get done what he wanted and he waited until it was politically savvy to do so.

I do think some Democrat politicians were legitimately against gay marriage and changed when public opinion did, but I wouldn't be able to say who for sure.

Andrew Johnson, alongside Andrew Jackson, has to honestly be two of the absolute dirt worst human beings as Presidents, next to Woodrow Wilson. They're fucking bottom 3 all-time for me.
