One more Heisman winner would mean that he'll tie both Frank Leahy (Angelo Bertelli, Johnny Lujack, Leon Hart, Johnny Lattner) and Nick Saban (Mark Ingram II, Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith, Bryce Young) coaching four Heisman winners.

Mississippi State coach Leach dies at age 61

Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach died Monday night after complications related to a heart condition, the school announced. He was 61.

Huge heartbreaker to hear about Mike Leach's passing. He was very entertaining, respected by his players and coaches, he took schools Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State to bowl games. He will sorely be missed.

Mike Leach was one of the 5 best coaches in major college football.

He was never going to win a national championship.

But he had a knack for taking over programs with spotty track records and turning them into winners.: Texas Tech (Lubbock), Washington State (Pullman) and MS State (Starkville).

I can tell you from personal experience that Pullman, WA, is very much a coaching outpost. Nice college town. But it sits in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

He may not have been Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney or Jim Harbaugh. These men took over powerhouse programs that, even if in need of a re-build, could be quickly turned around.

Leach, in essence, took over a pile of rubble at all three stops and built a mansion.

He also revolutionized a sport at a time when it desperately needed to be revolutionized.

Finally, Leach was a character that stood out in a world of boring corporate coaches who basically tow the party line on everything. He was part of a vanishing breed in sports: the interesting coach/manager.

He will be missed.

It’s insane how Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa. and Bryce Young all never won a National Championship as a starter.

That's true. Hurts lost to Clemson 35-31 in the 2017 CFP National Title game, Tua lost to Clemson in the 2019 CFP Title game with Saban's worst loss with Bama, 44-16, and Bryce lost to Georgia in the 2022 CFP Title game, 33-18. Hurts and Tua have done successful in the NFL and Young will be on his way soon when he either enters the 2023 NFL Draft, or unless he stay his senior season and enters the 2024 NFL Draft instead.
