I believe it's because the passing game is shoddy. Drew Pyne has passed for 8 for 17 105 yards with a touchdown and a pick. So that's pretty much the reason that Notre Dame's running the ball more because the passing game hasn't been too effective.

Also, Notre Dame's defense has done a great job only giving up 7 points and giving up 155 yards overall.

Pyne is not a very good QB. The D is up and down. Hence why ND is not very good this year, they lost a lot of talent (in addition to the HC) from last year.
