I'm trying to write a review of this at the moment. I finished The Last of Us a few days ago and it's one of the best games this year imo. It's still got faults mostly in the gameplay, the crux of the action is stealth and makes a couple of key mistakes stealth games shouldn't make in its attempt to be realistic. For example there are no markers and once you enter combat it isn't always clear where the exit is (for me and some others it seems) when you'd prefer to slip by the enemy or are low on supplies. Occasionally you'll be required to take down all enemies before continuing without the game telling you, and it lacks the feedback most other stealth games have to let you know you're visible or being spotted.
I admit it's genuinely immersive and oppressive but it's also a particularly frustrating kind of difficult. The kind where sometimes you'll wanna throw the controller and yell "How the fuck was I suppose to know!?".
Like I said though, it's still a really impressive game overall, the story is worth experiencing and worth revisiting. Almost every twist or road bump actually got me and the cutscenes do a lot to add tension to the proceeding gameplay. By the end, there's a dilemma that brings into question the morality of at least one of the two lead characters and an interesting disconnect beteen player and protagonist.
Wait for a price drop if you have to but do check out The Last of Us. The frustrations in gameplay aren't deal breakers and the game's story is carefully paced with a head full of ideas.
