With its March start date fast approaching, screen testing is underway for Josh Trank‘s upcoming reboot, The Fantastic Four. The only actor currently confirmed for the movie is Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch after Fox exercised the option it had on the actor following Chronicle, which was also directed by Trank. Today, we’ve learned about some of the actors testing for the other three members of the superhero team. Once again, Miles Teller‘s name is in the mix as he’s screen testing for the role of the elastic Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. Although Kit Harington was also mentioned as a possibility for the role, the actor won’t test for the role, and will instead star in Testament to Youth.
Hit the jump for more including a surprising twist to Dr. Doom playing the villain. The Fantastic Four opens June 19, 2015.
kate-maraWhen it comes to Sue Storm, we previously reported that Kate Mara (House of Cards) and Saoirse Ronan were being eyed for Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. According to THR, Mara will be screen testing for the role, but Ronan and Elizabeth Olsen won’t be among the contenders “as schedules and interest waxed and waned.†However, there’s a new name as a possibility for the role: Emmy Rossum (Shameless).
As for the team’s big orange rock monster, we reported that Josh Gad was rumored for the role, but THR’s article only mentions “Christian Cook“. Either Fox is looking at the actor who played “Bobby Avalanche†in the 2009 short film Surf Movie, or THR forgot to include an “e†on “Cookâ€, and the production is screen testing Christian Cooke, who recently played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter.
Finally, THR says Doctor Doom will be the villain. That’s not too surprising, and neither is the fact that the production is probably going for a big name since it looks like the superheroes will be comprised of rising stars. Where it gets exciting is that the studio “isn’t ruling out switching genders for the role.†That’s a cool possibility, and since they’ve already switched races on Johnny Storm, why not have a female Dr. Doom? [Cue sexism in the comments section]
While there’s finally movement on the casting front, sources tell THR, “this is not the end of the casting process and more may be read in the coming days and weeks.â€
I hope this does better than the first and second Fantastic 4. I frankly enjoyed them but if it can bring a new spin on them and make them better I am all for it.
