About Time (2013) 7/10

Latest romantic comedy from Richard Curtis about a guy blessed with a gift of travelling back in time to try and improve things which he attempts to use to find true love. Its a funny and sweet film, with a strong cast, but a slightly annoying lead character which was my main problem with it. It never quite reaches the heights of Four Weddings, but at the end it suddenly becomes a very tender and deeply sad film about loss.

Pather Panchali (1955) 9/10

First part of Satyajit Ray's trilogy following the lives of a couple of children growing in a poor village in India. The story is very simple, but visually the film really captures the magic of being young and gives a real poetic sense of location, the performances are excellent, and the story thought provoking and powerful.

The TV Set (2006) 7.5/10

Discovered this little indie gem on of all places movies24 late last night. Its a Hollywood satire about a guy who gets a pilot script commissioned for TV, but then discovers that he is questioned on every little detail and forced to compromised, with a pregnant wife at home he is conflicted on whether to stay true to his vision or give him for the sake of having a job. David Duchovny is perfectly cast as the sarcastic, but passionate director, he does the deadpan humour very well, but also brings out the sadness of the character and by the end of the film you really do feel for him. Sigourney Weaver really tears it up and is fantastic as the superficial producer, and Judy Greer is also enjoyable as the agent. Its a very funny and biting satire on the madness of Hollywood.

The Way, Way Back (2013) 8/10

Excellent coming of age comedy which is the best comedy I've seen all year. Very convincing performances by Toni Collette, Steve Carell (playing nasty well), Sam Rockwell and the young leads. The experiences of the lead character and his problems with fitting in are very believable, its a very funny film but also quite touchy by the end. Well written and nicely directed.

Upstream Color (2013) 7.5/10

Shane Carruth's surreal follow up to Primer explores even more dark and disturbing places than that film and owns quite a lot to early David Cronenberg body horror, but with a unique language all of its own. Its hard to sum up, except to say that at different times I felt creeped out, intrigued, confused and thrilled. Visually it was stunning, and his use of sound very powerful, but I could have done without the rambling in places.

Skyfall

Really enjoyed this. It was a lot more simplistic than previous Bond films and I liked it for it. Javier Barden is badass and Daniel Craig is an awesome Bond. Looking forward to the next Bond after seeing this.

Just Like Heaven (2005)

So I watched this with my girlfriend last night and it wasn't that bad actually. It's a romantic comedy, her favorite, but it was one of the best she's had me watch with her. It's different and has a lot of plot twists that you wouldn't see coming, and is fairly emotional at times. James Ruffo is a great actor as well, and Reese Witherspoon plays her character very well in it. A good date night movie with your girl. 6/10

Pitch Perfect (2012)
Another movie she had me watch with her and I never thought I would say this but I really liked it. A lot more than I thought I would. I love Anna Kendrick and the musical pieces throughout the movie are really nice. My girlfriend said something about a Pitch Perfect 2 coming out, and honestly, I wouldn't be against seeing it. The movie deserves a watch. 7.5/10

House at the End of the Street (2012) 4/10

Very bland horror/thriller, with dull characters, sloppy direction and little tension throughout. Jennifer Lawrence kind of gives it a good go, but also at times looks too bored to care. The film did improve a little towards the end, but mostly very forgettable.

Disconnect (2012)


This movie is BRILLIANT. Had little to no knowledge or expectations going into this movie and I'm well and truly blown away.


The movie shows 3 different storylines that all relate to technology in some form and the way these stories are presented is extremely well done and powerful. The final moments of this film will leave you on the edge of your seat and certainly doesn't pander to the typical Hollywood 'happily ever after' ending. The realism in this movie also blew me away. Great performances from everybody all around. Jason Bateman takes his skills to a whole new level and Andrea Riseborough is one to look out for definitely.


Please, do yourselves a favor and watch this movie. It is brilliant.

Lords of Salem

Personally not my favorite Rob Zombie movie, but by no means is this a bad movie. Sherri Moon delivers her best performance, the visuals are amazing, and the story was definitely intriguing. Sid Haig, & Ken Foree make appearances, with John 5 (formerly of Marilyn Manson) doing the score.

If witches and psychedelic imagery are something you enjoy, then this movie is for you.

A weird and quirky movie brought to you by Don Coscarelli, who gave us such great movies as Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep, and Phantasm. Drug induced reality hopping humour at its best.

Prisoners
Excellent performances from Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal (the supporting cast is underused), maybe Oscar material? Some scenes were really tough to watch, but those sort of scenes make a good thriller/drama.

On a negative note the film was over long, and some areas of the story was dragged out where others seemed to be glossed over rather quickly.

Jack Reacher

Recently started to enjoy Tom Cruise movies again after finding his craziness offputing for a few years, but the guys a great actor and knows how to pick a good role. The comic book nerds bitch about him not being tall enough, but he's believable as a badass. Great story to it and an awesome car chase scene where they dont pretend that a Yank muscle car has any ability at all to turn a corner like most movies do.

Spring Breakers
Really didn't expect this film to be the way it was, was definitely marketed differently when it came out. It's a film that could have been a lot better, but there was just too much wrong with it for me. The symbolism they try to get across feels a bit too forced at times, while the pacing was a bit all over the place. For every decent scene there's was an entire onstage thrown in that just makes the whole film look like one big music video. The cinematography is very good though, and Franco's pretty great in it. Unfortunately though, it has too much dragging it down. 5/10

Happythankyoumoreplease
Not as good as his second film Liberal Arts, but still an enjoyable film. Josh Radnor's clearly a talented writer, and even though he tries too hard with his language and artsy dialogue at times there's still some humorous and heartfelt moments throughout. The only thing that really holds the film down is the story between the youngest couple, which I just couldn't get into. The other two stories kind of make up for it though, thankfully. 6/10

I'll just throw down some ratings for movies I've watched recently.

Up in the Air - 9/10 - Really liked this. Always helps when Anna Kendrick is involved. Clooney is perfect in this role.
Monsters University - 8.5/10 - Pixar never fail to blow me away and this was no different. Great prequel that didn't take itself too seriously.
The Worlds End - 7/10 - Thought I would like this more being a big fan of Hot Fuzz. When the movie took a turn and went into the robot stuff I lost interest. The pub stuff at the start is what I really liked the most and I wished the movie just focused on that.
American History X - 8/10 - Second time watching this and I enjoyed it much more this time around. Thought the black and white was unnecessary though. We know its a flashback because Ed Norton has bald hair so they could have done it in colour. Great film and understandable as to why it's considered a masterpiece.
The Way Way Back - 6.5/10 - Decent feel good film. I enjoy watching these types of movies in between intense movies as a way to just sit back and relax.

Monsters University is better than American History X... Ummm okay.

Last movie I watched was some Sci-Fi channel zombie movie that had Crab Man from My Name Is Earl. I don't remember the name but it was acceptable. I'd give it about 6.5 since the actin' besides a couple of selected folks was pretty good.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

Barely noticed much of a difference for the first half of the film, and most was just a few seconds added to scenes. The best change was The Goblin Kings song(sorry not talking about David Bowie), as it really helped with the feeling of this being more child friendly than LotR. The runtime is now just barely over 3 hours.

9/10 and it felt much more like its own stand alone movie than The Fellowship of the Ring.

Smash Cut

A great homage to Hershel Gordon Lewis(2000 Maniacs, Blood Feast) with genre mainstays David Hess(Swamp Thing), and Michael Berryman(The Hills Have Eyes), and retired pornstar turned actress Sasha Gray(who plays a reporter named April, often dressed in yellow. And would probably have been a better casting choice for Michael Bay). Not a movie for everyone, but if you are a fan of the 70's ultra gory grindhouse films, this is one you should definitely watch.
