I really don't understand all the hate this movie generated, as I only ever heard one person claim it to be a good movie(and that was standing in line at a comic convention). If you are a fan of Kaiju movies, or large mech anime then this movie is definitely tailor made for you. Could have had a bit better pacing for being a 2 hour movie(the pace wouldn't be an issue for a 70 minute anime), but the effects and battle scenes more than made up for it.

Throw down some ratings for movies I've seen recently:

Elysium - Not nearly as bad as people have said. Actually thought it was a really good watch. Movie looks superb. Story flows well and Matt Damon does a great job as the lead. Some really good scenes here, pacing was good and I felt the movie was slammed a little too hard because of the directors previous efforts with District 9. 7.5/10

Drinking Buddies -
Very natural, nice flowing movie. Dialogue felt very realistic which was a nice touch. Turns out the movie was entirely improvised, they did a great job on that regard. Really enjoyed this. Olivia Wilde is amazing, and Anna Kendrick always helps. 7.5/10

Kings of Summer -
A very easy watch. Movie was enjoyable enough although I felt like it tried a little too hard to be something more. The story is simple and they tried to go over the top with it which I wasn't a fan of. Otherwise a perfectly fine movie that had some good moments and some strong acting in particular from some young, future stars. 7/10

Don Jon
Excellent film. It was really one of the most anticipated films of the year for me and in the end it even exceeded my expectations. Extremely well written, and fantastic casting with Tony Danza and Julianne Moore putting on very good performances. Also, a great directorial debut for Gordon-Levitt. I loved the use of repetition when showing Don Jon's usual routine, and the flow of the film was very good as well. One of my favourite films of the year. 9/10

Blue is the Warmest Colour
Really great... so much to say about it. For a 3-hour film it does go by quite fast, and even though every scene is pretty long, each one felt like the time was needed. It also gives much needed time for the story that it's trying to tell. The gratuitous sex scenes are obviously the biggest talking points, and rightly so. So many scenes in this film are just literally porn, no two ways about it. At times I felt like I knew what they were trying to get at, other times it all just felt unbelievably unnecessary. It still doesn't hurt the film too much though, especially since every scene is met with so emotion and intensity. I also have to comment on the lead Adele Exarchopoulos, who I thought was amazing. To think that she was only around 18 during the shooting of the film is absolutely insane. She's simply perfect in every scene. 9/10

Great review, while I do think the film needed to be shorter I still agree with much of what you said. I loved the naturalistic dialoque and how every scene took its time building, the colour and direction were great and yeah the two lead performances were just about flawless. One I will be revisting.

Shame

Wow what a movie. So intense, realistic and frightening. Wasn't expecting anything like this going in, I expected something more along the lines of a light-hearted drama that depicted the life of a sex addict as exciting. What we got was an in-depth look at a serious addiction and it was a thrilling insight. One of the best performances I think I've ever seen by Fassbender. Whilst he didn't say much, his body language and facial expressions told a deep story and made it all the more impact when he did let his emotions out.

Disturbia

A movie I loved as a kid. Shia LeBouf is perfect in this role and the movie is nothing more than a fun thriller. Doesn't try to be over-the-top scary or thrilling, though does a nice job of presenting the story in a thrilling manner.

Prisoners

Hands down the best thriller I've seen in a long LONG time. I wish more movies were as thought provoking and gritty as this. Jackman and Gylenhall do an amazing job here, and this feels a lot like a Fincher movie (Zodiac and Se7en in particular) with how well the movie stems from one scene to another. A nice lengthy movie that is definitely up there with one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Spring Breakers

Certainly wasn't expecting the movie we got. It was artsy, visually impressive and honestly, I enjoyed it. The girls were stunning and played their roles well. Franco absolutely owned in this movie, easily the standout. If anything, the ending was one of the major negatives. I won't give anything away, but considering the nature of the movie I found it highly unrealistic. The scene with Britney Spears' 'Everytime' is amazing also.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

What an unexpected delight! Was expecting something similar in style to the LOTR trilogy, but this went in a completely different direction and it really resonated with me in doing so. The light-hearted tone of the movie is definitely a positive. Nothing ever feels over-dramatic, nor does anything really feel as epic as the LOTR trilogy, but 'epic' was not what I was looking for in a film like this. All the characters are likeable and funny. The humor is really down-pat and fits the upbeat tone of the movie. Looking forward to seeing DoS after this.

Think I will check this out before seeing the recent film. I liked Jackson's LOTR films, but just think this is a step too far and that he should move on.

Movie 43

There was maybe 5 minutes I was not laughing, from the moment Hugh Jackman comes out with balls on his chin, to James Gunn's animated cat short, this movie is just ridiculous humour at its finest.

If South Park is too "over the top" for you, then avoid this movie, otherwise just enjoy.

Dragnet (1987) 7.5/10
A classic 80's perody with both Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks at the top of their games, the use of dry humour, ripe dialogue and a OTT soundtrack just make it a blast. Christopher Plummer is also good hammy fun in a very different role as the lead villian. This brings back great momeries.

21 Gramms (2003) 8/10
Very grim and heavy handed in places, but the script is smartly constructed, the atmosphere haunting and the performances totally compelling, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn (who I have not always liked) were both superb.

Internship- fully expected this movie to be total dogshit, but it did it's job and I was laughing throughout it. Might've been the movie, or the fact that my stoner friend was smoking outside the house and I was sitting by an open window and may have gotten a contact buzz.

Now You See Me - What a shit movie, Jesse Eisenberg was such an unlikeable person to watch and I just wanted him to die throughout the whole movie, the ending was overbooked like Russo wrote this shit. Fucking trying to have a Keyser Soze moment, but it was so predictable and stupid it dragged everything down with it.

X-Men: First Class: Second time watching this movie, and after taking off my X-Men fanboy goggles I really enjoyed it. Fassbender really did a great job, and was the best part of the entire film. The brief Wolverine cameo was perfect character wise, but Kevin Bacon in Magneto's helm still looks absurd. Bonus points for Fassbender donning the original Jack Kirby design at the end.

The Wolverine extended cut: I never saw the theatrical release, so people complaining about it should really watch this cut. X-Men fanboy goggles and everything I still loved the shit out of this film. It really felt like your basic six issue comic book story arch, and as an AoA fan I really enjoyed the history behind the sword(that Wolverine winds up giving to AoA Sabretooth, saying "the man that gave me this sword told me to give it to the person more honourable than myself" in the Dark Angel Saga). Lots of action, some great drama, and even a point of origins for Logan & Mariko's son Daken(currently one of the Four Horsemen of Death). Easily the best Fox comic movie, but still falls short next to Avengers, or Man of Steel.

Yeah I have heard that the twist of Now You See Me is a bit awfu.

X-Men First Class was very bland IMO despite the top cast.

The Princess Bride (1987) 9/10

A wonderful, feel good perody from my childhood which I still find hugely entertaining and charming. The cast kind of features a whose who of 80s comedy, such as Billy Crystal, Peter Cook, Mel Smith etc... but all in camos, Wallace Shawn is very devillish fun also. A very clever script.

Up (2009) 8.5/10

A beautiful and moving animation, surely one of Pixar's best. It also carefully mixed a number of genres, such as Sci-Fi, action, comedy and coming of age romance. I'm not sure the second half of the film was quite as good, but still very impressive.
