Whatever designs producer Avi Lerner and Sylvester Stallone have for Sigourney Weaver in The ExpendaBelles, the female-led Expendables spinoff, she won't be having any of it. According to THR, the actress has passed on the project and will instead play a boy's grandmother in Juan Antonio Bayona's adaptation of the children's fantasy novel A Monster Calls.
According to Lerner, The ExpendaBelles is aiming to go into production early next year. And with all three Avatar sequels also shooting around the same time, she probably couldn't fit the actioner in or why else would she passed up playing one of the deadly operatives who "must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator?"
When the movie was first announced, a spinoff made sense (even with that silly plot) given that The Expendables 2 opened well, but with The Expendables 3 performing well below expectations, the concept may have run its course. And no, it's not because the third movie was available online before the official release.
The ExpendaBelles probably won't have the budget available to its male counterparts, and that's probably what's saving the project from getting canceled right now, but we shouldn't be surprised if it does get canceled in the future.
I have less desire for this now, not that I had much of a desire to see it anyways.
