As noted, WWE has signed former NFL star Shawne Merriman to a deal. The idea is to bring him up similar to how WCW brought up Steve “Mongo” McMichael.

They’re looking at training Merriman as an announcer, put him on TV while he’s also training to be a wrestler, and then transition into being a wrestler when he’s good enough.

There is a renewed interest within WWE when it comes to signing NFL players who are still young but their football careers are over.

(Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter)

I know the name, but I don't follow the NFL.

Saw that he was on one of the panel groups and wonder if he joins a three man booth early on or is going to be on nXt.

Also have nothing negative to say about WWE being interested in football player, they have the size, and football has produced numerous HOFers and they are used to working with pain so it's a good idea, especially if they have name value. Good idea imo.

Isn't this the guy that went after Punk on twitter? Now i know why he's still sitting on the couch at home, what a quitter. I don't have high hopes for this but Monty Brown turned out well so i won't shit on it till i see it.

The guy seemed pretty comfortable on the WrestleMania panel so I'm ok with this for the time being.

Stick him on Main Event team so at least he'll know pretty much of all of the talent and their respected big moves which I can't see him doing with NXT really.

Mongo is not example the model example here lol. Not that surprised to see him want to be a wrestler he has the "look" he can use his lights out moniker as a wrestler and is pretty athletic for his size. That said he got busted for roids in the NFL and could easily see that happening in the WWE.

As long as he shows up, works hard and is decent in the ring, I'm okay with this. It was already mentioned, football has given us quite a few HOFer's. I look forward to seeing what he can do.

I hated him in the NFL, more than likely I'll hate him in the WWE.

There are some people I would say who can make this transition work and Steve McMichael isn't an example I'd use. I'd go with someone like Ron Simmons but I don't see Merriman carin' that much wrestling to do as much great stuff in the ring as he did.

I guess he'll fit in well in wrestling though since it's totally acceptable to hit women in that realm.

Didn't he just beat up Tila Tequila? Would hardly consider her a human being let alone a woman.

Know nothing about the guy, the days are gone when an NFL guy being a good wrestler was almost a sure fired thing. Depends if he can adapt his style while still retaining some of his key football traits.

WWE do need a announcer shake up, but I doubt this guy is the answer.

Who shat in your cereal? Football players are still great athletes to sign for pro-wrestling.

The WWF style of the 80s/90s suited a Football player more than now. I can't comment either way on this one.

Then why make such a big assumption on football players not being able to cross over to modern day professional wrestling? They are built tough are taught to play through pain and have battle tested and battle ready bodies. They ain't bodybuilders.....They play a professional sport, why dismiss them?
