Rick Rhoden led off the top of the third with a solo HR that put the Dodgers ahead for good. The Dodgers led 4-2 until the Giants pulled to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Ivie hit a grand slam in the top of the first to put the Padres up 5-0. The Friars added 3 more runs in the top of the third to take an 8-0 lead.

It looked like another Giants' loss was coming until...

The Giants erupted for 9 runs over the next 3 innings and made them stand up in a stunning 9-8 win over the Padres. Tom Shopay got the ball rolling with a pinch-hit 3-run blast off starter Bob Shirley to cut it to 8-3. In the fifth, the Giants added 4 more runs on a 2-run triple by Jack Clark and 2-run round-tripper by Gary Alexander. The Giants tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Derrell Thomas and then took the lead for good on an RBI single by Willie McCovey. Reliever Dan Spillner picked up the loss for the Padres. Terry Cornutt got the win and Gary Lavelle the save for the Giants.

It looked like the Giants were headed to their eighth win in a row as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. But starter Jim Barr couldn't hold the line and the Padres rallied for a 6-5 victory. The Padres took the lead for good in a 3-run third inning. RBI doubles by Bill Almon and Mike Ivie and an RBI single by George Hendrick gave SD the lead they never relinquished. After giving up 3 runs in the first inning, Padres' ace Randy Jones pitched 6 shutout innings. Closer Rollie Fingers came in in the ninth and the Giants scored a pair on a one out, 2-run triple by pinch-hitter Gary Alexander. But Fingers then struck out Bill Madlock and induced Derrell Thomas into grounding out to second to end the game. Dave Winfield went deep for the yellow and brown.

It looked like it was gonna be more of the same for Shirley against the Giants as Bill Madlock led off the game with homerun. The Giants went up 2-0 in the top of the second thanks to an error by Bill Almon. But the Padres scored 3 in the bottom of inning 2, 2 runs coming home on a 3-bagger by Mike Champion. Mike Ivie hit a 2-run triple of his own in a 3-run bottom of the third to put the Padres up 6-2. After allowing 4 hits in the first 2 innings, Bob Shirley allowed just 1 hit over the final 7 frames. Mike Ivie also hit a 2-run double in the seventh, finishing the day with 4 RBI's. After a 7-game win streak, the Giants have lost 2 in a row.

I'll have new series results posted in the coming days.

Also...

Some of my posts came through a little disjointed in the transfer. Will be cleaning them up soon.
