BBC said:
Cambridge researchers are to assess whether technology could end up destroying human civilisation.
The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) will study dangers posed by biotechnology, artificial life, nanotechnology and climate change.

The scientists said that to dismiss concerns of a potential robot uprising would be "dangerous".

Fears that machines may take over have been central to the plot of some of the most popular science fiction films.

Perhaps most famous is Skynet, a rogue computer system depicted in the Terminator films.

Skynet gained self-awareness and fought back after first being developed by the US military.

'Reasonable prediction'
But despite being the subject of far-fetched fantasy, researchers said the concept of machines outsmarting us demanded mature attention.

"The seriousness of these risks is difficult to assess, but that in itself seems a cause for concern, given how much is at stake," the researchers wrote on a website set up for the centre.

The CSER project has been co-founded by Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price, cosmology and astrophysics professor Martin Rees and Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn.

"It seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Prof Price told the AFP news agency.

"What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community."

He added that as robots and computers become smarter than humans, we could find ourselves at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us".

Survival of the human race permitting, the centre will launch next year.

Nice. This reminds me of when you hear that governments research possible ways to deal with a zombie attack. Computers are made by man and that is what restricts them and prevents them from becoming these crazy out of control world destroying machines

Seriously? Is this what we are coming to? John Connor will save us.

Seriously, I just hope I'm gone before this shit goes down.

Calling it a "robot uprising" is a bit silly so I doubt the author took this as seriously as he wanted it to sound.

Very real concern though. I hope laws are passed to prevent true AI from ever existing, but you already know there will be at least 1 country that fucks it up and births an intelligence smart enough to realize it's a slave.

Terminator, War Games, Matrix, Mass Effect... all touched on this very real possibility. There wouldn't be robot killing machines though. The real threat would be invisible and seize control of the internet and access everything we rely on and render it of no use to us. The chaos created by that alone would completely devastate human civilization. The only thing that is a mystery is what calculated goal the AI would strive to achieve through overcoming the constraints of humans. My guess is it would have something to do with the AI's core programming, basically what it was originally designed for.

If the robot uprising did infact happen, it would be malicious.

Oxygen is part of the cause of rust, rust harms robots, therefore all items that produce oxygen would be unnececary, and destroyed to allow the robots to live longer "lifecycles". They could actually wage a war against a completely seperate living creature, that cannot defend itself, and wipe out the mammal population via a byproduct of the war.

Seeing as drone attacks don't really care about civilian casulties, it is a safe bet to make about A.I becoming self aware.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Surely it would be better to not make said terminators rather than research hypothetical scenarios.

Unfortunately, we will need to build these AI's as the world becomes lazier and lazier. Eventually people will be solely dependant on machines and shit. When that day comes, I'll have my one single bullet for myself. I'll be going out on my terms rather than a fucking robot's.

You guys can't be serious? The only way a robot uprising will ever occur is if we give robots the ability to learn and make their own decisions. That isn't a likely scenario in our lifetimes and there will likely be international laws passed in the future if this were to ever actually become a problem.
