The Wire - considered by many to be the greatest TV show of all time. I think it's an acquired taste, as it's quite complicated, has a bazillion characters (hard to get into at first), plenty of social commentary but it does show equal time to several different points of view, from the police to the criminals they're going after through wiretaps (hence the title of the show) to the higher-ups, including the Mayor himself in latter seasons. One of the best things ever put on film, TV show or movie.
Breaking Bad - still has eight episodes to go this summer before it wraps up for good. A normal guy with a family finds out he has cancer, and because he's an overqualified chemistry teacher in high school (he's a chemistry genius in reality), he decides to start cooking meth to make enough money for his cancer treatment and for his family, in case he dies. His partner in cooking meth is a former student of his and his brother-in-law is a DEA agent.
The Shield - underrated show that never got the attention it deserved. An anti-gang/drug team called the Strike Team are very effective cops, but also dirty and the show is on one hand about normal cop stories having to do with the ST going after hardened criminals, but also about the drama of them possibly bringing about their own destruction through corruption. The latter is where the show's main drama lies, although the former is what carries the show from episode to episode.
