Yeah I am gonna have to pass on this one. It's just to broad and solely based on opinion and if its all time some of us have been around longer so we have seen more athletes. And lol at Babe Ruth and athlete in the same sentence.

Unfortunately I think I might have to give this one a miss as well. I'm going to find myself getting frustrated if people are picking based on their opinions and I really don't want that. Also, Babe Ruth may not have been the most athletic person out there, but its hard to deny how good of a baseball player he was.

I'm not gonna pass, just suggest we find some way of narrowing the field down. At the moment the field is way too broad to get enough repeat answers.

Besides, my top pick (Emil Zatopek) probably won't get near the list anyway.

Well if winning three gold medals in the Olympics doesn't get you near the list, I don't know what would. I'd imagine most people wouldn't include him, just as I imagine some people would leave off Jim Thorpe or Michael Phelps. I expect to see most people's lists peppered with homer choices rather than actual proper ones.

I'd say another thing that could really help this list out would be if people pimped out some of their favourites in this thread. That way we all might be able to sway each other's lists a little based on the people we list.

I will list all of them that are mentioned but did not make the list that was my plan. If anyone wants to break the field down so as not to have such a diverse group we can and then do a tourney to determine the best athletes your call.

Maybe do a nominations thing for each individual sport and then the top vote getters move on to the tournament?

Hershall Walker- this guy should be in the PRO football hall of fame, but for some reason his USFL stats don't count for anything. If they did He'd be a top 5 running back all time.

The guy also has won MMA fights. Sure, they may have been against nobodies but I'm pretty sure he was close to 48 years when he won his first fight.

With this said, I'm gonna pimp a few runners, as that's my sport of choice and I know a lot of them will be relative unknowns.

Emil Zatopek - Best known for winning 3 gold medals at the 1952 Olympics in 5000m, 10000m & the marathon. The marathon is the most notable as it was the first one he ever ran. One of the first athletes entered into the IAAF Hall of Fame. Well known for his brutal training regime and awkward running style, a legend in running history.

Ann Trason - Western States ultramarathon legend. For those unaware, ultramarathons are races longer than 50 miles, a lot of them clocking 100. Between 1989 & 2003, she won the female race 14 times, also holding the female course record for 18 years. She's also held the female course record for the Leadville 100 since 1994, as well as course records still standing in 10 other ultras.

Scott Jurek - Another Ultra god, winning the Badwater Ultra twice, Spartathlon (a 153 mile race!) three times, and the Western States 7 years straight between 1999 & 2005. Oh and he did all this on a strict Vegan diet.
