Make absolutely sure you know how to use it, and how to create/mount partitions, install boatloaders, configure networks and such from it.

Solidus: What dist would you recommend to someone who is relatively new to Linux and who wants to learn how to use it? I have a spare laptop which would fit well as a Linux laptop. I used to run Ubuntu on an old desktop computer a few years back but found it pretty boring.

@Stopspot any really, just stay away from Ubuntu and its Unity interface. I'm assuming this spare laptop isn't too powerful.
Check out Mageia: http://www.mageia.org/en/
Fedora 18 just came out too, and Mint 14 is nice too. Use XFCE or Cinnamon though, not Gnome, MATE, or KDE.
