Okay I have made it a point to try and learn more about this so I downloading Pokemon Yellow on my 3DS and have been playing it... quite fun so far but there is such a mountain of games and things... I feel like I'll never be able to make a dent in it all.

Well I figured it was smart to get a cheaper game first to see if i liked it. What do you recommend I do?

Play gen 6. X/Y or ORAS.

I definitely figured it would be different but I love learning. I'll look into the ones you mentioned and see if one speaks more to me.

ORAS is the latest, just a few extra pokemon. They are Gen 3 remakes, the best generation imo. I'd recommend those. I thoroughly enjoyed X though.

Best thing to do is learn by watching people play. I started with ShadyPenguinn's UCL league run. That's a link to the entire season playlist.
He is not the best battler (@deth loves to point that out), but he makes his videos very entertaining, much easier to learn when you enjoy it.

Other entertaining competitive Pokemon stuff:

ShadyPengiunn wifi battles - best to start with mid 2015 stuff, video 50+
KingNappy wifi battles

both guys are super fun to watch.

Thank you for all of that I'll watch some of those videos tonight. It looks like this all might be quite a challenge for me to take in but I find that more enjoyable. I wonder if maybe I should watch a few of those videos before I decide which game to get or does that not matter?

Yeah, the first time I watched any of the videos you guys posted in this thread I was just like "Woah". I always played Pokemon and loved battling my friends but had no idea it got that competitive now. It's kinda cool though.

It doesn't matter. Competitive battling is completely separate from the main game, and virtually unchanged between X/Y and ORAS.
Most important thing to learn is types and abilities, once you learn weaknesses and strengths then you can start building teams. It's all about team synergy.

Here's a perfect example of 2 Pokemon with amazing synergy,

Ferrothorn and Chandelure. You can see below that Ferrothorn is 4x weak to fire type attacks (because grass is 2x weak, and steel is 2x weak),

However, Chandelure has an ability called "Flash Fire".

Grants immunity to Fire and increases Fire's power 50% when hit by a Fire move.

So when Ferrothorn is in against a fire type and you have Chandelure, the mind games begin. Do they choose a fire type move and risk you switching in Chandelure and getting a boost? :lenny:

I think I'll definitely enjoy this a lot then. It's this sort of thinking and strategizing that I really enjoy. Though I think I'll have to put it into practice many times over before I fully understand it. But I'm happy to have a place to ask questions

Yeah that is not a bad idea.. I've heard a few but will probably understand them better if I play the games too.
