That's because it's unthinkable that Cena could ever get the better of Rock.

He did though, remember the wrist comment? Rock looked legit confused when he used that remark.

Didn't he throw everything he had at him regarding that though? What else was there for him to say beyond I've been where you've been? I really don't get how it's obvious, if was any one else markdom would come to mind but you're not that kind of poster from what I've seen.

I don't remember the exact promos but there were times when I was waiting for Rock to come up with a stronger comeback but didn't. Also, it could very well be a little of markdom since I admit I'm a huge Rock mark.

I still don't buy that that wasn't set up. I remember all the arguments people made last year about why Rock would write his promo notes on his wrist and I didn't buy any of them. He's cut longer (or just as long) promos as that and never needed notes on his wrist before.

Before his 7 year break and his incredibly hyped RAW return...? Of course he would use notes, it's sensible. You don't buy into that but you buy into WWE forcing Rock to put notes on his wrist and then get called out? Rock looked legit rocked when Cena said that, it was OBVIOUSLY real.

Saying it's 'unthinkable' was my Rock markdom shining through admittedly, but in the situation last year, I thought Cena's arguments against Rock were pretty weak and that Rock could have destroyed him more easily. He could have pointed out that it's not unnatural to be passionate about one career but then become more passionate for another and thus Cena whining about him leaving is stupid. He could say that leaving opened a spot for someone else to rise to the top (like Cena), which is actually helpful to the newer guys on the roster. He could point out that the WWE isn't as well off with Cena on top as it was with Rock on top. He could also dismiss Cena making fun of him for playing the Tooth Fairy as it isn't the same as he (Rock) making fun of Cena because tooth fairy was just a fictional role that payed more money than Cena makes a year (or maybe in two years), whereas the person Rock was making fun of is who Cena really is.

I think sitting here saying what who could have said to someone results in both of them "not trying". Most of those promos were improvised you can tell, with one direction of selling the feud. Anyone who has had heated debates/arguments on the spot knows you normally walk away thinking "Damn - could have said this". I just think Rock was rusty and Cena was superb, there isn't much difference between them on the stick at all.

He's a movie actor who memorizes lines for a living, I don't see why he would have a problem memorizing what I saw as a simple promo, one that didn't require him to do a lot of fast talking. Speaking of which, he also cut a pretty fast paced promo at Survivor Series 2011 live backstage and didn't miss a beat. Rock said WWE even wanted him to cut it taped just to make sure he didn't screw up but he insisted on doing it live so he could play along with the crowd. He didn't have a problem then, why worry about screwing up in front of a live crowd this time? Did he have notes on his wrist during his comeback on Raw in 2011?

Movie actors have the perk of re shoots. memorizing scripts fully is not that much of an issue.

Personally, I think CM Punk vs The Rock on the mic would be a great opportunity for CM Punk to get some real heat from the crowd. After all, why insult The Rock when The Rock’s fans are the easier targets? The Rock certainly isn’t above ridicule, but his fanboys are right; he went to Hollywood, made a ton of money, and now he’s back in WWE taking over the whole show. He’s a smart and successful man. The real idiots are the marks who cheer him and enable his return, the ones who go see his movies despite his crappy acting and stupid scripts, the ones who jizz all over the screen whenever he deigns to make a (satellite) appearance. Punk could call the audience sheep, vapid lemmings who cheer for a man who’s coasting on the past glory of an somewhat legendary career, who doesn’t care about the fans and only intends to milk them for as much publicity as he can before he goes back to Hollywood to make more kids movies because he sucks as an actor and has no purpose at all as anything greater than a novelty muscle-man that kids giggle at. Punk could claim that real wrestling fans would cheer for Punk, because Punk is a better worker than the Rock, better in the ring than the Rock. Because Punk has earned everything he ever achieved with nothing handed to him because of his heritage. Because Punk is straight edge and straight edge means he’s better than the Rock – and all the fans.

Imagine the boos. Be pretty epic, I think. It would be a lot like Punk vs Jeff, only a million times better.

Rock could point out that Straight Edge doesn't just refer to drugs but also to not engaging in promiscuous sex, which Punk very conveniently ignores for his own benefit (he's admitted to sleeping around before.) Pointing out this slight hypocrisy that contradicts Punk's life philosophy would not only be a good dig at Punk, but also would allow Rock an opening for a joke about he gets more pie than Punk could ever hope to get.
