You should all loathe yourselves for looking like goofs. To argue over music is something I like to call Blue. Why, you may ask? Because music taste is opinion based. So yes, people enjoyed/still do enjoy Nirvana, solely because their music was usually believed to be that of being anti-famous and anti-government and shit. A ton of people LOVED that shit back in the day. To be quite honest, Nirvana has some of the best lyrics out there.

I'm not taking one side here, and I'm going to prove it right now by calling Pete out on the Tool and Dream Theater stuff. Both of those bands are great, to say otherwise is your opinion, but to use what you find them as repetitive and shit as your argument against them honestly makes your argument null and void. Music is opinion based people, enough with these petty arguments, and I honestly despise the OP for posting this bullshit thread. All this ever leads to is an argument, because the OP probably knew there were Nirvana fans, and probably just wanted to get a rise out of people. So I'd honestly recommend a Staff member to lock this shit before it gets more out of hand.

In words of a wise man... "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one."

You being the brain trust of the forum do realize that 88% of this forum is opinion based so if it's useless to discuss opinions well then we should all just leave.

Furthermore, if you'd bother to read three post above yours a staff member gave a warning about the way the discussion was progressing so until you become staff why don't you leave the staff decisions to us mmkay thanks.

Only thing I have to disagree with here is that it's not just the staffs responsibility to keep things cordial. A memeber has all the right to remind people as well. Don't put staff member up on a high horse.

I do agree that music is all opinion based. It's impossible to have a discussion about it without someone getting offended, or fighting back. I will however say that I am not a fan of Nirvana or anything grunge for that matter. I think it's stupid how Cobain committed suicide because he couldn't handle the fame. If he didn't want to be famous why did he sign with a record label? Why did he allow the radio to play his songs? He could have kept it a secret, but he let it out. It was all his doing, and he wussied out.

I think the only good thing to come out of Nirvana was the Foo Fighters. I do enjoy them. I just don't think Nirvana would have been as big as people perceive them today if Cobain had not killed himself.

@RRS Discussion is healthy.

@Mick ever heard of duties? Sometimes you have to do shit you don't want to do. Kurt had a bunch of advisers, managers, the other two members, etc... who probably spurned him into doing those things.

The thing with stating that a band like Tool is repetitive, sue it may not just be your type of music as Nirvana's isnt mine but too me every Nirvana song Ive ever heard sounds the same, messy guitar work with mumbled singing.

Listen to Polly or Where Did You Sleep Last Night, then Tourette's or Territorial Pissings, and then Swap Meet or Hairspray Queen.

Green Day should loathe themselves for being 40 year old men who dress like 15 year olds and play awful, whiny music.
THANK YOU!

Also, Tool = pretentious and repetitive (I saw them in concert, could not tell one song from the next and literally - LITERALLY - FELL ASLEEP midway through).
Tool is "pretentious"? You do know what that word means, right? Quite honestly, they're arguably the most diverse and talented band of the past 20 years. Disliking their music is one thing, but claiming they aren't even a good band is just wrong. And that's NOT an opinion, that's a straight-up FACT. Quit posting nonsense.

"Pretentious" means "self-important". Tool always struck me as "look at us, we don't need no stinkin' choruses! We're EDGY! And Different!"

Similar to Nirvana as such, more importantly their fans.

Nirvana are like Green Day, their fans believe they're talented; when in actuality they are nothing more than below-average, power-chord ortinated with very little appeal or the depth of powerful hooks, presuming Nirvana are amazing is a little more than lulz.

Now I'm not saying I only listen to underground stuff because that's absolutely non-sense, nor am I Elitist... I have the likes of Kanye West, Eminem & Tupac mixed in with the brutality of Hypocrisy, Behemoth & Omnium Gatherum. Plus I know how to play instruments and have awareness of writing lyrics, hense why I have that varied range and Nirvana have NEVER been a game changer to me, their lyrical ability was SHOCKING, they had what? Two good songs at most with good lyrics, Polly & About a Girl.

Nirvana over terribly over rated musically and generally by their fans, do Dream Theater and Tool get buttloved? Yes they do, but they have that musical prowess to back it up.

Thank you sir. Your analysis has just owned the thread.

You move into a special category of awesome for being a Behemoth and Hypocrisy fan.

I'm a lyricist too, and I find most of Kurt's lyrics quite good (and some of Billie Joe's old stuff too). AND I'm a bass player, and both Krist Novoselic and Mike Dirnt of Green Day are influences. I mean, OK, a talented guitarist Billie Joe ISN'T; but the other two...? Forget about it. If you only know the band post-American Idiot, the assumption that they're mediocre is valid. If you know their older stuff, however...

Listen to the bass and drums on that and tell me they're not talented.

About Tool...IDK. They just always seemed like the ultimate hipster band. Every single person who's ever gushed to me about Tool was a musical elitist and/or a hipster.Apart from maybe one. I guess they're just not my cup of tea. I need choruses/hooks to keep me interested, I'll admit. I'm very mainstream that way.

As well as, you know, music critics.

Music critics are unrelible sources, actual musicians and producers are more relible sources when it comes to gauging actual musical talent - you know, the guys who actually produce the stuff.

There's a video of Corey Taylor (Slipknot vocalist) praising Justin Bieber, and quite rightly the sense he was praising him in but also acknowledging he's part of a very big hype machine. You get a big label behind you, you're certainly gonna be successful as a musician. At the end of the day, talent shouldn't be gauged solely on popularity and general hype but the actual innerworks of the music.

That's the thing though, Nirvana were also praised for the innerworks of their music. They weren't just a popular band built off hype, but also a very good band that gained a lot of people's respect in the music industry.

You'll see bands from Metallica to Arcade Fire that are fans of Nirvana. Not only are they highly regarded from music critics, but they're highly regarded from many, many musicians as well.
