The origin of the word and it's literal meaning is beyond fucking irrelevant. It's a word used by non-blacks who hate black people. Period. There is seriously no reason to further analyze it. And if you seriously believe quoting it's historical origins should somehow make it seem less offensive or that black people should just tolerate it because there are more vulgar words in the English language, you should probably line up right behind Deen to get your own head examined. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. And if you seriously don't even know why it's offensive, you're just a flat out idiot.

If it is so offensive to them, why is it that I hear it more from their own mouths? Are you black, does this personally effect you? otherwise you are just another person who knows only what you are told, and what you are led to believe.

The only people getting pissed off about racism these days are white people. Not the minorities in which are being effected, because they are too busy trying to ignore the situation, instead of making a huge deal about it and shoving it in peoples faces.

One would think people being ignorant to the origins of words would make that word irrelevant to its intent. Language being the beautiful thing that it is....evolves.

Take the word out of the gutter and use it for something else, it becomes a totally different meaning. Why stop a word? The word isn't hateful, the usage may be, take the hate out and you got nothing.

Did you seriously just ask me that? Are you really that clueless of the context black people use it as opposed to everyone else? You can't explain it with a dictionary, assuming that's what you're using to formulate your absurd stance on the matter. I don't use that word because no matter what context I use it in, it's perceived as inappropriate by damn near everyone coming out of my mouth or any other white person's. That's simple common sense. Whereas black people sometimes use it as a synonym for "friend". HOWEVER... it only works for them because they're BLACK and it's still regarded as inappropriate language.

I honestly don't even know why I just wasted my time explaining that. I have a feeling you already know it and are just thumping a dictionary to preach your own civil rights, which sounds monumentally arrogant for any white person on earth to do... once again... for obvious reasons.

Deen's usage of the word however DID have malicious intent. And it wouldn't matter if she didn't regardless considering she's an old white woman and has no business using that word in any context. So I really don't understand what you're talking about, assuming you're not just being a complete troll which I'm beginning to think you are.

Except I am not white. The blacks should consider themselves lucky the Americans only enslaved them, they massacred my people.

I also find it funny that you talk about context, when you were just on the other side of that exact argument with Deezy. Its about equality, if they are capable of using the word in other contexts, that are not malicious, EVERYONE should be capable of it. The fact you say its acceptable for one race, and not another, is infact racist.

Lol why would it be okay to call a black person the N word when it has been used for years as hate to separate them from white people? Nobody is going to give a shit if black people use it, because that's their word really. They use it for different meanings, as has been said before. To try as defend this situation is completely ridiculous.

Again, if something is socially accepted by one race, and looked down upon when used by another, that's racism.

Whatever happened to trying to be equals in this world?

In the end what matters is intent, someone can use the word without being a racist. Intent and context is everything with situations like this. Someone who uses the word and has an idea about using black people dressed as slaves for a wedding makes them a racist.

Anyway let's cool down a bit. No need to get so worked up on an internet forum. The topic of race and racism is a tough one to talk about because there is so much passion on all sides of the argument but let's focus on this specific incident rather than broadening out into generalisations.

This thread is about Paula Deen and her comments and actions that have lead to her being dropped by almost every major company that backs her. She has made her apology and been on the PR warpath but I think that she should just lie low. Focus on her restaurant and the business that she still has, stay out of the public eye and sort out this lawsuit.

By that logic, Quentin Tarentino is a racist, because he employed blacks to play slaves in Django Unchained. I think the thing to remember here, is who exactly is getting offended, if they are willing to be paid to play a role, and are not offended themselves, is there really any right that we have to say it is or isn't racist?

There is a huge difference in writing a film about slavery like Django Unchained where a slave is a hero to dressing people up as slaves because it is cute.

I agree that if the person that the comment is directed to isn't offended than others shouldn't be for them. That is where this lawsuit gets interesting because Deen's lawyers are trying to dismiss it due to Prop 8. Because the person that placed the lawsuit is white and was not a victim of Deen's racial discrimination she can't sue (if Prop 8 is upheld by the judge).

As I have said previously I don't agree with this lawsuit, she has only done it because she was fired, but I don't mind that she has brought this side of Deen out in the open. It should have happened as soon as the incidents happened but still it better that it has seen the light of day.

Samuel L. Jackson was the house slave, and was probably just as evil, if not worse than Leonardo DiCaprio's character. There were also about 100 others that played slaves that were not the hero. I see it as being employed to play a role, regardless of its for film, theatre, or a theme for a wedding dinner.

Since I don't know if that plantation wedding actually happened, was actually planned, or is just hearsay, I cant really make too much of a deal about it. A lot of this issue, with the exception that she said it once 30 years ago(because she admitted to that one), is that it is one persons word against another. Usually in these cases people are coming out of the woodworks with more and more accusations, without ever being able to verify the accusations of another. Because every reported incident is coming from differing people, many of whom are probably just trying to get their 15 minutes because Paula is famous, I can only take these with a grain of salt.

A really good comparison would be the way people acted when Michael Jackson was on trial. To the best of our knowledge, and as the courts ruled, he never touched a child, and it still does not stop people from saying that he did.

Bunch of bullshit from a preachers podium

A word is just a word, Richard Pryor made it cool and used it for different purposes. And this whole shit was about Paula Deen right? Crucified for using a word over 30 years ago, doesn't matter if everyone thinks shes been saying it ever since, 30 yrs ago is what we are all talking about, if we are going to judge people from the past, why not dig up Johnny Carson and sue him too? He was saying it on his talk show. So he must be a racist fuck right??

A word is just a word, get over yourself and see the irony of labelling me a troll in a thread about a negative label.
