Kimbo vs. Shamrock might not happen
- KEN SHAMROCK HAS 50/50 SHOT OF FIGHTING KIMBO (UPDATE 8:15 ET)
Saturday, October 04, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
The CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights main event fight between Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock may be in jeopardy as MMAWeekly.com has been alerted that Shamrock sustained a cut that could force him out of the bout, as confirmed by Melissa Ingram, Shamrock’s assistant.
The cut in question happened within the last 24 hours and apparently doctors are currently checking Shamrock to determine if he can fight or not. According to Ingram the chance of the bout happening is “50/50.â€
The cut was sustained due to an accidental head-butt that opened up an old cut during a light training session last night, according to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports.
If the fight between Shamrock and Kimbo is unable to happen, it is unknown if a replacement could be plugged in and approved by the commission in such a short amount of time.
The loss of the main event between Slice and Shamrock could send shockwaves to the EliteXC show on CBS as many have predicted the future of the promotion could hinge on the success of tonight’s broadcast.
EliteXC officials were unavailable to comment at the time of publication.
(UPDATED - 8:15 P.M. ET)
Sherdog.com confirms that Aaron Rosa, who was scheduled to face Seth Petruzelli on the preliminary fight card, was offered up to EliteXC as a possible replacement for Shamrock. The promotion apparently declined Rosa's offer.
His initial opponent, Seth Petruzelli, however, is rumored to be under consideration if in fact Shamrock is not cleared to face Kimbo in tonight's main event.
Meltzer has more on the story, saying that Frank Shamrock, Ken’s adopted brother, has also been under consideration to face Kimbo. That seems an unlikely scenario considering that he is normally a middleweight and would likely have difficulty getting cleared for a fight at heavyweight against the 235-pound Kimbo.
