Re: NBA Regular Season Discussion Thread

The Clippers were profitable pre-Staples as well. They have a unique ability to get people to come to their games because they advertise the hell out of them and offer reasonable prices that aren't too cheap but not too expensive. Golden State has always been the exact same way in California.

The Raptors also are a team that make a profit every year, even this year with no Bosh or VC type star. Vancouver could never capture that type of success.

Some teams simply need to learn how to market themselves as much as anything. The case and point would be Dallas who weren't making a profit back in their Jason Kidd led big 3 days, but began to make one with Dirk/Finley/Nash after Cuban spent money and marketed his franchise.

Hell the Lakers themselves even with Mikan were sold so cheap because they stopped selling. They weren't even that great of a draw during the West, Wilt, Baylor, Goodrich era which is why Buss swooped in and bought them cheap. He took ads out on TV, radio, and in the papers to market Showtime. He paid for the billboards, commercials, and everything to get Kobe and Shaq's face out there in 96 and he also paid for the roster talent to win.

Some teams simply do not want to pay for a talented roster and for marketing to get people to want to see their teams play and support them. You honestly can't tell me that Charlotte can't sustain a profitable team when they did it for years with the Hornets (before the new owner wanted to move them). The Bobcats just this past summer chose money over winning by letting Felton walk and sending Chandler away for cap space. The other teams should not have to pay for MJ making that business decision. You can't tell me that Sacramento, Indiana, or Phili can't support a NBA team after how how their attendance and revenue was with Webber, Miller, and Iverson respectively. The Nuggets are also a prime example as they have been profitable the past 7.5 years after 8 years of losing games and money becausse of Carmelo despite being in a pretty good market.

There has to be some accountability, not just a small market excuse. OKC is a perfect example as the Hornets were profitable there and the Thunder are now even when they had losing records. The fact is they marketed Paul and are marketing Durant to get people to come and watch.

Also at no point did Phil say 8 teams. He said 24 teams, which is pretty close to what the league had during the eras or Jordan and Bird/Magic. Having 2 divisions in each conference and teams play at least 4 times like it used to be isn't something that is new or has proven to fail in the past, but having 30 teams and with some of them not making enough money to the point the NBA has to by the team is proving to do so.

And a hard $100 million cap? So, you want the summer of 2010 to repeat itself every 3 years?
I threw a 100mil out there because of the fact that some teams generally pay that with the tax.

I think 75 is fair as long as the bird rights are still established by teams and contract limits are still structured by how long players have been in the league.

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS. How about them? No Marcus Camby. No Andre Miller. Down by as many as 16 against the Pacers and come back to take the win by 5.

They got a hell of a coach like I've been saying since last year. Seem to always make due despite half the squad being down.

Miller goes down, so Wes plays point and scores 19 and gets 9 assists. Good man.

They were just in not matching Portland's offer. Nobody thought this undrafted rookie would turn into the player he is and justify his contract so soon.

Wes didn't play point. Rudy and Patty took turns.

Re: NBA Regular Season Discussion Thread

Seems like it was just yesterday when the Kings getting 10 wins would mean their tenth in a row or something. How times have changed. Can't say much tho as times have changed for the Suns too :(

Re: NBA Regular Season Discussion Thread

I dont know what the hell to do with that team, except have them move to Anaheim!

Id expect a name change if the Kings do indeed move to Anaheim.
