I'm not the *biggest* Bret Hart fan, but he really did "make" SCSA with that feud. Maybe one of the best rubs anyone has ever gotten from any wrestler. Austin was a great tweener... his reactions weren't huge because fans weren't sure what to make of him. He would have them eating from his hand though, getting them to boo or cheer easily based on what he said. I had a thread on exactly this based on one of his promos I had seen recently.Steve Austin was sort of a gloating point for me. I was a HUGE fan of his in WCW when he had television title, US title and tag titles with Brian Pillman (one of my favorite teams ever, the Hollywood Blondes). I used to tell everyone how he would eventually be one of the biggest names in wrestling and all my friends thought I was crazy. The caveat, however, was that I predicted the "Stunning" Steve character would be one of the greatest heels of all time, so I really wasn't right but my friends all remember it as if I were.
But yeah, he really only started gaining popularity because of Bret Hart's gradual heel turn. Even Hart's ring entrance at Wrestlemania 13 (another event I had the pleasure of attending) was far louder than Austin's. But even before that Rumble, if you go back and watch the crowd response for Austin on the PPVS and RAW, they're pretty quiet.
