WWE.com has released the following statement:

WWE.com has learned that WWE Champion John Cena sustained an injury during WWE's European tour. The WWE Champion injured his right Achilles tendon while battling Ryback.

The injury raises questions about the scheduled match between Cena and Ryback at Extreme Rules on May 19. What lies ahead for the Cenation leader? Does this put Ryback one step closer to capturing the WWE Title?

There are no details yet about Cena's expected recovery time.
This sounds like a storyline to me.

Achilles tendon is a serious injury, no way this is a storyline.

They don't seem to make up storyline injuries for John Cena, so if this legitimate, WWE is legitimately fucked in terms of real star power -inb4punk- I mean real, real star power unless Undertaker and Triple H are actually able to go till I would say Summerslam at the earliest.

Damn if this is a bad injury.

More dirtsheet news suggests he HAS been working since the injury but only in 6-mans so with a small workload. Presumption is a strain and not a tear because a tear would mean he'd be totally done and crutch-ing that bad boy to the ring. MIGHT be able to work through a strain with some protection both in-ring and to the story. Bad news in general if he has done it though.

Pretty sure this is real. If he tore his Achilles tendon, he's pretty fucked. That is a tough injury to come back from, and a long one too.

WWE might try to bring Punk back sooner now. They have no choice but to push Orton, Sheamus and Ryback into being main eventers, and they may want to see if Taker, Trips, and Brock can do some more appearances.

The Ryback match is gonna' suck if he works it now even if it's just a strain, but that'd be much more welcome than a tear and him missing time.

Storyline.

We won't get lucky enough to see Cena sell for a real injury, and put him out for a few months. We never get that lucky.

Were you not a wrestling fan the last few months of 2007?

Not lucky enough to see a man get legitimately injured? You're some kind of heartless bastard.

I freaking hate the Rock, but even I'm not happy to see he got injured and needed surgery.

Oh, and Cena has been hurt before. He broke his neck. Do you remember that? Yeah, I bet you were jumping up and down with joy.

Probs just another fake injury so they can sell the "Cena wins against all odds!" shit they usually do with him.

Cena overcoming a "Achilles tendon" injury to beat RYBACK would be hilarious.

I doubt the WWE would begin a story revolving their top superstar at a live event, so it's probably not a work.

That being said, John Cena is a freak of nature. He came back from a torn pectoral muscle in four months. He came back from a broken neck in three months, so I don't expect him to be too hampered by this injury or miss any time

Hope it's not legit but on one hand would be dumb if it is a work since last thing Cena needs at this point in his career is a against all odds angle.
