Because he used to be a talented filmmaker before he got lazy.
Lazy?

I get that people didn't like Avatars kinda retread story.

But lazy? That's so far from true...dude has advanced filmmaking arguably more than anyone in the last 50 years(and no that doesn't make him the best director, just his filmmaking has catapulted the Industry forward).

Avatar was a far cry from a "lazy" film. Should have spent more time on the story, but the film itself was breathtaking.

Also while I get the Dances with Wolves comparison...but you're ignoring just about every movie rips some type of plot point or idea from another movie.

Also, I think it ripped more from Ferngully than Dances with Wolves.

George Lucas advanced films more than cameron.

Sorry, but it's absolutely true. How did he advance filmmaking? By hiring the right people for the job? The dude has essentially been fucking off exploring the Titanic wreck for years with his stupid deep sea challenge bs so yes, he's a lazy filmmaker because he's not, you know, making fucking films! Also, if you'd read the article I posted, HE admitted he ripped off Dances With Wolves (numerous other times as well) to save himself from a lawsuit brought against him by another writer who said Cameron ripped him off. It's all right there from the horses mouth, so to deny the Dances With Wolves thing is dense.

I'm just so tired of people defending Cameron like he's some sort of God when he's not even delivering what you expect from him. Has he even announced an actual release date for the second Avatar movie, let alone the other ones? Just saying the year doesn't mean shit to me when he's backtracked on them numerous times before. Why defend a guy who isn't even interested in making movies for you anymore? Makes no sense. Tbh I'm surprised they were even able to interview him. I guess his batho-sub was being refuelled that day.

Sorry if this comes across as salty but his bullshit really pisses me off. Biggest fraud in the business right now.

But, regardless I mean doing a remake can be considered lazy as well though.

I'm just going to go ahead and tell you why this news doesn't matter to me.

Avatar sucked. It was beautiful visually, but sucked otherwise. I won't watch the others if they even get made.

Now I'm going to go potty.

I'm eating short rib tacos so I'm working on the prequel right now.

The only worse than getting more Avatars sequels would be getting prequels.

Gregor Lucas advanced Filmmaking?

He brought some ideas, and hit the jackpot with Stat Wars, then damn near ruined it.

Cameron was the first to really use CGI correctly in film with the T-800 in terminator.

Topped that with the water tendril in The Abyss, and forwarded that with the T-1000 in T2.

Need a way to film the Titanic at the bottoms of the Atlantic, where movie cameras don't really work?

No problem, I'll create it(and yes, I'm sure he had other experts help).

And he pretty much is the o only one that made 3D a viable film format, for the good, and if you want to blame him, bad since everyone hopped on board when they obviously shouldn't have.

I'm not in any way saying he's a great director, or he didn't cop out on the story he's telling.

But calling him a hack or lazy is way off base.

That should be reserved for guys like Michael Bay and maybe Zack Snyder.

BTW, I'm not his hugest fan, I had issues with the retread plot of Avatar...but the dude does deserve some credit.
