No I am not talking about an R.E.M. song I am talking about the 21st of December 2012 the day that the world is apparently going to end. That date is the end of one of the long counts on the Mayan Calender. For whatever reason people with tin foil hats determined that this would be the end of the world when actually it would have been considered a day for celebration since it is the start of a new long count calender. It is amazing how hysteria works and this will end up being like Y2K, a whole lot of nothing.

Amazingly NASA have had to make press statements pointing out the facts surrounding the day and telling people that the world isn't coming to an end. They have reportedly been receiving thousands of messages from people, some of whom apparently haven't eaten or slept because they are so worried about this date.

What I find odd is that even if this is the end of the world, and it isn't, why would you worry? You can't do anything about it so if you actually believed that the world would end why wouldn't you have the best few weeks of your life and have fun for the final few days.

I shall end with this;

People are idiots and will believe anything.

That is the reason they want to believe this is the "End of the World" as if Y2K was considered it, and some other dates before then. I mean how many ends of the world has there been so far? I'M A FREAKIN SURVIVOR! WOOOOOOO!!!!!

I have to laugh at this, if they could predict the end of the world, why didnt they see Cortez comming?

Completely agree with not wanting family to be out that day, just because of crazy conspiracy theorists/preppers.

I like how soon after event like this the doomsdayers will come out and say we had are calculations wrong it is actually on XX/XX/XXXX date. Parks and Recreation spoof it really well with a group that books the park each time they think the end is coming. When the group gets it wrong the leader comes back and says he recalculated and that the actually day is later on. But it turns out the park is booked that day so he quickly says no wait it is the day after. That sums up these groups quite well.

I am interested in seeing what happens that day though because if I was a leader of a terrorist organisation (DISCLAIMER: I am not) I would plan a string of attacks on that date. If you can get people to panic you can create havoc so if these groups were strategic they would hit a whole bunch of high profile targets on those days to freak people out.

That's the real scary thing about this kind of thing, that you actually have you many people out there who want it to be Armageddon.

And that's not just your tin-foil wearing nut-jobs I'm talking about, you have your fundamentalist Christians, Muslims and Jews praying (quite literally) for nuclear obliteration in the Middle East to bring about Judgement Day.

Prophecy and the like don't scare me. Self-fulfilling prophecy on the other hand, that's what you have to watch out for.

good to know you're not a terrorist leader Troy, I had my doubts... and the types of people you talk about are the ones I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong I will still pay attention to the family of four that drives off a cliff because "If we're gonna die anyway, we're doing it on our terms" but I sure hope that World Leaders are SERIOUSLY ready for just about anything to go down that day

With those kinds of people you just have to hope that they will just take themselves out rather than taking others with them. They can use the old standard cult method of drinking poison together to go find their maker.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a legend. Seen him many times on the Colbert Report and the Daily Show, such an intellegent man that presents his case so well and without talking down to anyone. I like how, in that video, he points out that every year on December 21st the sun, earth and centre of the universe line up yet it is never mentioned on any of those end of the world websites. Such an easy fact to check yet some will read it and worry.

Did my shifty eyes nearly give me away

I am sure that most governments will be on high alert that day because there will be some extremists out there that will take advantage of an event like this and will try something. I am pretty confident that quite a few governments will have a gag order on most media outlets to ensure they don't try to stir up panic with sensationalist stories that day.

This may be a distasteful thing to say, take it however you like as I really don't care, but I can see there being alot of suicide attempts. There will be people who truly believe in this so much that they don't want to experience whatever causes the world to end and would prefer to end it on their own terms. We'll hear or read about plenty of attempts, successful or not, and the world won't end.

this is precisely what I was referring to in my above post.... there was a prophecy of the world ending a year or two ago by some nut job and there was a family (Husband, wife and 2 young kids) that drove their car off a cliff and died because they only wanted to go out on "their terms"..... there will be countless more stories like this on Dec. 21 and it is truly sad what lengths people will go to

I'll be staying home, safely confined within the walls of my house that day. There's quite a few "end of the world" parties around, but I'm just worried about the loony shit some morons will do that night without sense of remorse. People killing themselves is the least of my worries.

BUT HEY IT'S CANADUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH and at least there won't be as many of these nuts as there will be south of here B|
