They were honestly pretty close as Lex became insanely over in 1997. So much so they put the strap on him even though they were deep into the 18-month angle with Sting and Hogan.

Him defeating Hogan was a legit moment for sure

I couldn't believe it. They were just months away from Starrcade and Lex gets this big upset. Even Hall and Nash were pushing Hogan to put him over. They said it would be good for business and it was.

It's interesting though, because like you said, they were working on building Sting vs. Hogan... having Hogan lose to Luger before Sting was an odd choice.

Yeah, my feelings are so mixed on it. Especially in hindsight. Because it takes the shine away from Sting if Lex JUST beat Hogan. So why is Sting doing it special? But this is a rare case of a promoter actually putting the strap on someone when they're actually over and not waiting a year to do it.

Also referring to Hogan vs. Piper in 1996 as the match of the century is um.. yeah, just asinine

Don't get me started. I never saw Piper as a main event guy, but especially not in 1996.

At least it was early in the nWo build. It was even dumber doing the cage match in 1997. By that point WCW had far better opponents for Hogan.

I mean, Piper was an amazing promo and passable worker. In the 70s or 80s I would have loved to have him as a top guy.
