West Virginia was very Pro-Unionist and anti-Confederate so it basically struck a deal with the Union to secede from Virginia and become its own state, which ultimately aided the Union with the passage of the 13th Amendment. They quite legitimately came in clutch.\

But yeah, Republicans have successfully whittled West Virginia into one of the hardest-right states in the entire union, even more so than the stereotypical Cotton states.

It also doesn't help that West Virginia doesn't have any metropolitan areas in its borders since it's bordered with Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It's basically the Montana of the South.

When I did my ancestry thing, the general path most of my ancestors took seemed to have been virginia -> Texas with not many stops along the way, seems that's where they originally settled and most were among the early Texas settlers in the same general area of East Texas they still live today

Kentucky at least has Lexington and Louisville, but those cities aren't as big as the usual Democratic havens in other Red states.
