Yeah, he was born Gaius Octavius, but when he was adopted by Caesar, he literally became "Gaius Julius Caesar", the name of his adoptive father. Historians hate that so they named him Octavian, which is a past term for Octavius. Augustus was a title that was granted to him by the Senate which means "The Ascended One".

Augustus hated both Cleopatra and Antony enough that he would do it out of spite. The thing about Augustus is that people think he was beloved, but he was a bit of a monster during his Triumvirate days, he'd have people slaughtered for little to no reason, and even committed human sacrifice, which in Rome was SUPER DUPER ILLEGAL! Anyways, the probable reason is to keep people from finding their bodies and possibly rallying against him in the name of independence.
