Mark Antony was Julius Caesar's right-hand man, and when Caesar was assassinated, Augustus (known by modern historians as Octavian), and he were rivals, then came together with another of Caesar's lieutenants, Marcus Lepidus, to form what became the Second Triumvirate. Eventually, they three killed Ceasar's assassins and split the Roman Republic between them. Antony became entranced by Cleopatra and fell in love with her, trying to give parts of the Republic between their children, and Octavian seized the opportunity and got enough public support to declare war on Antony and Cleopatra. Needless to say, he won, took all of Antony's lands, conquered Egypt, and eventually formed the Roman Empire, being named Augustus.
