What's actually funny is that a few Christmases ago I got two copies of the Commentaries as gifts from my brothers, who did not realize they both got me the same gift lmao. On the plus side, one was in English and the other in full Latin!

Yeah the different translations give their own personality too, usually just in what adjectives they use so it's not an intentional thing but it can make a big difference

I give Caesar a ton of credit, he knew how to build shit in extremely quick fashion: Walls, forts, and bridges.

Like it's a drinking game to me whenever Caesar builds a wall for whatever reason lol "Ope, Caesar built a wall! Time for a swig!"

Yeah a big portion was devoted to how they would camp and have full blown forts built by the next day

Debatable how much of that were loyal workers vs slave labor tho

I know during the second British campaign he actually had every single soldier learn how to build boats so he didn't get stranded

I'm inclined to think on that specific time period, he was paying most and not that badly, a rarity for the times tho

Just in a vacuum Caesar was an outlier for his time.

His only flaws were his vanity and blind trust in his friends.

I think Caesar was ultimately in the right in not executing his enemies and I think that wasn't even a political decision as it was an extremely personal decision based on the fact he was a marked man in his youth who was also targeted. He really did not like personally killing people.
