Former WWE creative team member Seth Mates says if history is any indication - we shouldn't expect a long title reign from new World Heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan. Mates tweeted on Monday afternoon @SethMates:

"To borrow a holiday metaphor, this is the time of year (between Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble) when Vince (McMahon) 'tries on' his new clothes or new main eventers."

"Foley (99), Jericho (01), Evolution (03), Edge (06), Sheamus (09), Miz (10), Bryan (11) among those elevated during this stretch of (the year). And to continue with the bad holiday metaphor, Vince has (until) Royal Rumble undercard to return them if they don't fit just right. Also, Jeff Hardy in '08 - almost forgot him."

"So don't be surprised if Bryan loses the title at (Royal Rumble). Not a dealbreaker...just Vince's history with change."

As previously reported, original plans called for Mark Henry to remain champion for several more months. However, Henry suffered a groin injury during his match with John Cena on RAW last week and the call was made for Henry to drop the title at TLC.
People were already assuming this anyways and guy is pretty much right as they do this pretty much every year trying someone out as a main eventer.

I'd have him drop it at the Chamber, then rematch at mania.

Interesting call, and I suppose when you do look back at it, it is 100% true.

Look at the names though: Foley (99)- feud with Triple H was absolutely brilliant
Jericho (01)- became one of the biggest names in the WWE, and has been involved in some of the great feuds. And was the first Undisputed Champion.
Evolution (03)- one of the great stables and produced Randy Orton and Batista who became huge
Edge (06) - his rise was quick once he got his chance, and for me he will be remembered as one of my favourites of all time
Jeff Hardy (08) - I loved Hardy, and he was the most over Champion of that time, the fans loved him and he put on some great matches, and his feud with Punk was awesome
Sheamus (09)- I think right now, Sheamus is the most dominant superstar on the roster, and could even by one of the most over
Miz (10)- beat John Cena at Mania, then went off the boil a bit, but is coming back as a mega heel

Good signs for Bryan if he can follow in those footsteps

I'm hoping Bryan gets a pretty long reign, he looks like he will be a great World Heavyweight champion. He should lose it after a couple PPV's but not at the Rumble or even the Chamber, I would like to see him show everyone that he is a great champ. He should be in an Elimination Chamber match and win it in the end or something, or even lose it to a guy like Sheamus.

Like others have said, I am predicting Daniel Bryan to retain the belt at Royal Rumble and lose it at Elimination Chamber. I just don't see him hanging on to it for that long and definitely not retaining in that type of match.
Oh well, at least he got a decent run then anyway and actually got to hold onto it.

I wonder how Smackdown will be this week and it's ratings.

Wait... wait... wait? This says this proves that new superstars that haven't won this title at this point don't have long reigns? Miz last year proved that wrong. It depends on the guy, seriously. I don't think WWE has much faith in D-Bry but I don't know the plans behind this.

I'm getting the feeling this is just a bitter ex-writer trying to cause stir in the internet community.

Of course I will look for most reasons that Bryan should keep the belt.

WWE needs to look at the crowd and SD's rating this week.

Bryan as Champion is great, I really hope he holds it until E/C

Championships need better reigns these days and Bryan can always put on a good match

Championships need better reigns these days

THIS!

I've said many times in the past that World Championship reigns are patheticly short nowadays, which is why I personally loved the fact that guys like The Miz and Kane recently had reigns that lasted 150-160 days. Some reigns that last a few weeks can be necessary in some circumstances, but the past 5 years or so they've become ridiculously frequent. Unfortunately for Mark Henry, his reign didn't manage to reach 100 days, lasting 91 days because of a groin or thigh injury. He was planned to have held it until about Wrestlemania, which would've meant his reign will have lasted 196 days, making it the 3rd longest WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign.

If it wasn't for that injury, Daniel Bryan wouldn't be World Heavyweight Champion and I don't think Big Show would've even have become champion either. It's clear the WWE don't have any plans for Big Show to have a run as World Champ, otherwise he would've been the better choice then Bryan, but purely because he has been involved in a feud with Henry. That way Show would come out on top with the gold, Henry could rehab the injury, and the Daniel Bryan cashing in at Wrestlemania storyline would continue as planned.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of reign Bryan has as World Heavyweight Champion. I think it's a good decision to have him hold the belt until the Elimination Chamber because he'll at least have one title defence but also lose it in a very tough match against five other superstars. To me that's a respectable way to lose it.

didn't think it was going to last long, it would be nice to see him hold on to it for a bit but he will probably drop it back to Henry in a three way at the rumble or chanber between bryan v show v henry

The former writer isn't really saying anything earth shattering here. I don't think that many people expect a 12 month title reign for Bryan but I do expect him to hold it for a month or two.

He´s pretty much right.

I expact Bryan to retain his WH Championship at RR on loose it at Elimination Chamber heading to Wrestlemania for his rematch or something like that.

Both Jericho & The Miz's title reigns were of a good length so I don't know how exactly that helps this argument in it being a short reign.
