If you want to know why the situation is preposterous just google 'age of consent in United States'- there is literally a different set of guidelines for each state.

and as I said before if she were 17 it is a complete non issue. They could have hypothetically been together (legally) for two years but as soon the older girl turns 18 it becomes 'bad' or 'immoral' ? the fuck outa here. And what if the two were genuinely in love? They are supposed to be like lol brb, just turned 18, see you in 2 1/2 years when this is more socially acceptable!

give me a break

That's why I could only comment from a UK knowledge base! We're not even in the same stage of school as 15 year olds when we are 18 so the thought of it is much worse here, we'd have to physically go to a high school to pick up an underage kid if any of us dated one (which is why it sounds much worse!)

If they were genuinely in love it's down to the parents of the younger girl to show a little more respect to it and speak to the older girl and her parents in a more low-key way. Explain why they're not happy with it and deal with it out of the public/legal eye.

It just concerns me that if this were a male/female relationship people may judge it differently. It also sounds awful that they could hop states and be allowed to continue elsewhere.

Any time you are discussing sex or relationships and 12 year olds it is a lot murkier IMO. The difference between a 12 year old and a 15 year old is exponentially more than the differences between 15 and 18 year olds IMHO

You're totally right, not going to disagree with you at all. It's a complicated subject with many rights and wrongs and as much as I think lowering the consent age in the UK might solve a few issues it could also open up the biggest, ugliest can of worms ever to exist.

Yeah, but it IS different. A gay relationship isn't the same as a straight relationship, and a girl isn't the same as a boy. The fact that they're female and gay does entitle them to a little extra sympathy, IMO. It seems unfair to hold them to the same standards as a regular couple when the dynamic of their relationship if fundamentally far more tricky.

The thought of 12 year olds having sex is pretty disturbing in and of itself. My sister turns 12 next month and I would honestly murder any 15 year old thinking he is going to do anything like that with her.

While this does seem logical, it seems a lot of Americans are fucking idiots. They'll just say, "OMG why do gay relationships get better laws then us, what about equality!" or some shit. This country is stupid when it comes to gay relationships, they can't get married yet they have to follow by these laws. :pity1:

You make a valid point but for the record I am speaking as a gay female. It's trickier as there may be some added interference from the parents on a sexuality based level as opposed to just a "we're annoyed that our daughter is underage" level. And yeah, the dynamics can be different...namely they'd probably have been a lot more intense with each other which probably would have played a huge part.

I guess I just try and look at things equally between gay/straight/bi people, it makes things a little less biased directly from myself.

I can't say what they did was wrong, I can't say it was right. I can say it's a horrible situation for all to be in and I think it would be dealt with totally differently here.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind that they didn't do anything wrong. The government is just overbearing for the sake of being overbearing. They were peers who went to school together, god forbid if they formed an attraction and acted on it.

Most kids do now. With any luck the Police will look at it as an individual case and take into consideration the thoughts and feelings of the younger girl away from those of her parents, if they do that I can't see how there can be a case.

Wait a second? Doesn't the gay community want to be treated the same as everyone else? It seems unfair that they push for equal rights, but we can't hold them to the same standards? Nah, give them their rights, and treat them the same as everyone else. No special favors.

Anyways, I knew some people in my h.s. that dated freshman when they were juniors and they turned 18 and the girl was 15 or 16. Seems petty to me.

How about we just stop prosecuting 18 year olds for things they do with their peers who attend the same school that they do? Male, female gay straight or bi who gives a fuck. There is nothing wrong with a HS Senior dating a high school sophomore.
