Which part of Italy did you go to Cork?

Firenze beach in Tuscany, its a beautiful part of the country and the food over there is second to none. Been to Genoa too, but its nothing to write about.

I move to Florence in July for six months for work commitments and I don't think I'll be coming back here.

Yes Keith, the DVDs played fine in Portugal and should do in the UK.

Anne Frankhuis is hugely overrated. Of course it doesn't help that I think the whole Anne Frank thing was heavily fictionalised bullshit...

But since it is based on her dairy I am not sure how you can say that? Will give it a look anyway.

I went to a small town in Northen Spain last year called Gijon. That was pretty impressive, it had lovely scenery and a nice beach. I found it very relaxing and would go back.

Well, considering she was 13, and wanted to be a writer, it would be VERY EASY for her to embellish her diary entries to make the dull days more interesting, and so forth. it has always irked me how the whole thing has such a PERFECT narrative flow, everything fits together, every loose end is tied, sequences of events are perfectly defined...we all know, in real life, things are seldom that clean-cut and logical. Just sayin' though...

But I think some of that might come from the how the book was written, and the overall impression given, I am sure a lot was changed for dramatic effort, but I would think the general story we hear is mostly true.

Right the trip to Amsterdam is this weekend and I am really excited! Me and my friend are staying on a Boat which should be cool.

I will try and check out that DVD store you mentioned Pete, do you remember the actual name? Have a few ideas of places to go and have found a few good records shops too, should be a good weekend.

I can't remember the name, but if you find Madam Tussaud's, it's right around the corner from there, near a supermarket. It's just off the main square, at any rate.

DO SEE: Amsterdam history museum, Jewish museum (if you're interested in that), one of the art galleries (I saw the Van Gogh museum, which loses for featuring ONLY Van Gogh artwork, so I'd skip that one).
SKIP: Anne Frankjhuis (rip-off), boat ride (you can see the same thing on foot, at your own pace).

Mostly it's fun to just walk around town. You're going in Summer, I went in Winter, but you should still have a good time. Just don't go into any booths with blondes inside them. And beware of where you consume brownies and muffins. ;)

HINT: The coffee shops are really easy to tell apart from the 'coffee shops', so you should be fine :)

And I assume you'll be staying in one of the houseboats along the canal? That sounds really cool. I stayed in a dingy little hostel in the Red Light District, not as bad a location (or room) as you might have thought. Close to everything, and noise levels were generally much lower than would be expected.

Oh, and if you're single, the girls are gorgeous, and VERY approachable.

Can't wait to go back there.

Probably. But most importantly, you're sure to come out of there with more than just empty balls...

Thanks well I am single, but was with a female friend so even if that was my style it was never going to happen lol.

Yeah staying on the Canal was lovely and the weather was perfect. Like you said I was suprised how quiet it was but it is still a very colourful and exciting city with so much to do, we did lots of walking.

Didn't go the DVD store in the end (its called Fame I think). However did do a lot of record shopping and went to a very good Flea market my friend got a old fasioned coffee maker there. Highlight for both of us was the Anne Frank Museum just found it to be deeply powerful and educational as there was a lot about the history I didn't know. It also made me think about what a creative mind she had and how advanced for a girl of her age. Enjoyed the Van Gorgh aswell which was actually more than just his work but also painters who inspired him or vice visa. And the Rjictz musuem, but personally I am more a Van Gorgh man than Rambrant not that I know what I am talking about mind lol. Great weekend hope to go back soon.

In this instance I was talking about the actual non-prostitute girls. I was with females as well but I did talk to a couple and they were very nice.

Loved Albert Heijn, the supermarket. But then again, I'm a more "walk around like a local" kind of guy rather than a tourist. I took the same approach in London - I purposefully skirted all the tourist traps.

I knew what you meant Pete, just was on holiday with a firend and enjoying her company and the weekend as a whole. I agree that the people were very friendly from what I could see.
