He called him Philip because he was talking about him in real life, not as the character CM Punk. And they did have heat with each other (Punk said Rock doesn't deserve the credit he gets for the WM27 buyrate when he did nothing meaningful there and he called him an asshole backstage at Survivor Series later in the year) but they've made up for it since then. Just like Rock and Cena, who I saw hugging in a video backstage after their WM28 match.

Anyway, I still don't see the problem with Rock winning the belt. As mentioned, it'll perhaps bring a lot of attention to the product and probably make headlines that 'movie star The Rock/Dwayne Johnson won the WWE Title again" and as a fan, it'll be cool to see him with the belt again. Also, he's gonna be involved in the main storyline heading into WM29 as it is, and if that program is for the belt, then what difference does it make whether he's champ or not? Lastly, who else could beat Punk for the belt? He's beaten pretty much everyone else at this point (Cena, Bryan, Jericho, Del Rio, Kane, The Miz, etc.) Ryback would have been a good choice, but he's already failed to win the belt twice now, and a third time coming up in January. Undertaker would be terrible considering he can't even work a full schedule anymore. Sheamus is the only other choice, but do you really want to see that? (And to be absolutely technical, Punk beat him once already on Main Event as well.) Rock is almost the only fresh opponent that is left.

To the first point, it'll definitely make headlines but again that's a short term gain; just like when The Miz won and he made the headlines. I also don't see how Rock making headlines after winning the title is going to bring in that many more people whether than the Rock just coming back anyways. The vast majority of fans of The Rock have to know by now that he's been back on occasion and probably have some idea he'll be back for the Rumble, in a society dominated by social media I doubt many will find out for the first time by that headline. And most of the people who'll turn in for The Rock will probably turn in regardless. Any fans of Dwanye Johnson the actor alone already know about his wrestling background and probably already gave it shot and have already decided whether they like it or not, or if they haven't given it a shot at this point, chances are him winning the title won't. I don't think WWE should be booking solely in the right now; not to say it couldn't turn into a long term but since it's almost definitely going for Rock vs. Cena/Punk/both than it's not going to happen.

Secondly, I hope you realize that this is just as much as a reason against him winning as it is for, perhaps more. Again though, this relies on the whole honor before reason thing I mentioned previously, combined with what I was saying in my lost post in this thread and the previous paragraph. But to the honor before reason thing, the biggest difference is one of them devotes their life to the business, works their ass of on a weekly basis for the business and the shot to hold a championship, and the other one devotes like a third of his time to wrestling at the most? That just rubs me the wrong way. It's like someone leaving one company to do something else, and then suddenly returning for three months and immediately steals that promotion you've been working your ass off during his absence to get. Yeah, he may be better qualified, but that's why this logic is called honor before reason.

Finally, if it wasn't for that damn match in January, I'd have a good counterpoint. Although, I read a report that said it's doubtful that match will end up taking place but yeah I don't hold too much value in it. The only thing I can really say is there is actually no real reason for it to be somebody fresh. There are ways to revamp on old feud into feeling like something fresh. Like Punk being a heel now while Bryan is a face (I believe, haven't watched since September) would put a new dynamic on the feud (plus no AJ). A character change or something to the effect is basically what I'm getting at.

Yes, I didn't watch during Rock's time, I started watching wrestling during MMVI (2006 - I like roman numerals . . .) so admittedly I lack the fan boy, nostalgia feel that most of you have and thus lack the big reason why most want him to win the belt. I get that, but I'm no stranger to nostalgia and I don't honestly feel my opinion would differ had I grown up with the Attitude Era.

The problem with Punk/Bryan is similar to Bret/Michaels - great as the matches are, they don't draw that well. The casuals would rather see larger than life superstars like Cena and Rock battle it out than just a typically great technical wrestling match.

That title is going back to Chicago after Royal Rumble. Dwayne is just gonna have to deal with the fact that CM Punk is the best in the world and will still be champion

When CM Punk is calling The Rock ''Dwayne'', it doesn't mean you can call The Great One ''Dwayne''.

Oh yeah, totally. I mentioned Bryan/Punk as an example of a feud that if done now could be fresh in comparison to their last feud due to the changes in both characters to try and counteract your Rock is the only fresh opponent left argument.
