WWF THE WRESTLING CLASSIC
NOVEMBER 7TH, 1985
ROSEMONT HORIZON
CHICAGO, IL
This is the VHS version with Vince in the studio explaining the tournament and how hard it was for someone to win this many matches in one night.
We go backstage to Vince and Lord Alfred looking at the brackets listed on an actual board in a cool little thing. The coolest match is Steamboat vs Davey Boy in the 1st round!!!
Monsoon and Ventura are our commentators
Match#1 Adrian Adonis w/Jimmy Hart vs Corporal Krichner (1st Round)
Only 3 minutes, sadly as it one of those shows. Adrain guides the idiot through some stuff and bumps big to really help him out. Adonis counters a suplex into a DDT to steal it.
*3/4
Match#2 Dynamite Kid vs Nikolai Volkoff (1st Round)
Nik sings his anthem to start, so DK climbs up the top and catches him with a dropkick to in in 4 seconds.
Poop
Match#3 Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs Ivan Putski (1st Round)
Randy gets 2 minutes to work because life is pain. He stalls a lot and bumps like crazy for the old man in amazing form. He rolls him up and puts his feet on the ropes to steal it
*
Match#4 Ricky Steamboat vs Davey Boy Smith (1st Round)
Also 3 minutes. Fuck. Awesome back and forth though as they go hold for hold and show off some strength and whatnot, and it's good shit and i wish we had a longer match to view. Davey starts to move ahead with a sick gorilla press and a headlock and he looks to have it, but he gets crotched on the top rope when he misses a tackle and the ref calls it in a real bullshit ending.
**
Post match, Ricky checks on Davey to make sure his balls are ok.
Match#5 Iron Sheik vs Junkyard Dog (Round 1)
JIP. Also, i think the VHS has all the interviews cut which sucks, but it also makes it easier to watch. They have a horrible fat old man fight for 3 minutes, and the crowd being white hot is the only saving grace of an otherwise bad time. JYD wins with a headbutt.
1/2*
We go back to the ring where Funk has a mic saying he doesn't want to wrestle Moondog Spot. He says they should leave the ring and settle for a draw and go home.
Match#6 Terry Funk w/Jimmy Hart vs Moondog Spot (1st Round)
They go on the outside and Funk punches him in the head and tries to run into the ring, but Spot grabs him and they fight some more and Spot jumps back in to win via countout.
FUCK YOU
Post match, Funk beats the shit out of him and rants and raves.
Match#7 Don Muarco w/Mr Fuji vs Tito Santana (1st Round)
FOUR MINUTES, MY GOODNESS. Awesome slug fest between the two old foes to start, and they still have that amazing chemistry as nothing has been lost thankfully. Don gets a control seg and beats his head in after dropping him throat first on the ropes, and it's killer stuff as always. Tito is powerslamed and the pin is made, but his foot is the ropes and Don doesn't realise so he thinks he won. Tito pops back up and hooks a cradle to steal it.
**1/4
In the back, Mean Gene is with Bobby Heenan. Bobby says he's scouting new talent and watching this very, very closely. He's got 50 grand for Bob Orton if he beats Orndorff, or anyone else who takes him out. He tells that punk to get ready because he can't wait to see hm finally go down to a headhunter. So cool they at least gave me a Heenan promo.
Match#8 Bob Orton vs Paul Orndorfff (1st Round)
Six and half minutes!!!!! Ahhhh, you love to see it. Paul goes right for the "hurt" arm and has some fantastic pissed off work on it, and Orton's selling and attempted escapes are even better with how badly he tries and fails to get out of it. Ace catches him with a knee to the gut and goes to work with some cool elbows and shots with the cast, and Monsoon says he's a wrestlers wrestler and it's a shame he's such a bad man. Paul makes a sweet comeback and pinballs him all over to give us some amazing Orton bumps. Orton loads up his cast and cracks Wonderful in the face for the DQ
**3/4
Post match, Wonderful comes back to life and punches him and runs him off.
in the back, Vince and Alfred go over the 1st round matches and all the shocks and turns we've gotten thus far. We get the list of quarterfinals
-Dynamite Kid vs. Adrian Adonis
-Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat
-The Junkyard Dog vs. Moondog Spot
-Tito Santana vs. Paul Orndorff
Match#9 Adrian Adonis w/Jimmy Hart vs Dynamite Kid (Quarterfinals)
Jesse leaves commentary to go and speak to Macho Man about his match. This is 5 awesome minutes of big bumps and awesome strikes from two all times freaks and crazy motherfuckers to ever do it. Adonis works the legs and does some super mean stuff, and DK sells it really well as you'd expect. Adrian misses a spear and hits the post and brains himself, and DK fights back and kicks the shit out of him. DK runs Adrian into Jimmy and rolls him up to win.
**3/4
Post match, Adrian throws a fit and cries about his loss.
In the back, Gene is with Jesse. Jess says two heads are better than one and three heads are better than one, and with him watching everyone in this and seeing all the flaws, he's told Randy what he needs to do. He will be unbiased with his commentary as he's the man who tells it like it is.
Match#10 Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs Ricky Steamboat
Liz is now in a yellow dress to start the trend of her changing clothes during shows like this. Savage uses her a shield and a sick fight breaks out with Ricky using his karate to fuck Savage up. It turns into a crazed sprint with a million cool shots and counters, and like Savage/Tito, i can not wait for this feud, They keep having a killer back and forth and both men get closer and closer to ending it. Randy gets an object out of his tights and when Ricky tries to backdrop him back in, he punches Steamboat in the face to knock him out to steal it.
**3/4
Match#11 Junkyard Dog vs Moondog Spot (Quarterfinals)
50 seconds of shit before JYD wins with a headbutt.
THUMP FUCK
In the back we go back to Gene and Heenan. Bobby again says he's here to scout from every vantage point to see what he can see and learn more. He says you never know who the best talent is, and Wonderful and Tito is a treat. Hogan is tired after all his defences and is ready to be picked and there will be a new champion tonight.
Match#12 Paul Orndorff vs Tito Santana (Quarterfinals)
EIGHT MINUTES LORD HAVE MERCY. Really great tight mat work to start with his being fought fairly, but as hard and mean as possible while keeping that trend. Tito has his leg taped up after his last match, and Jesse says it was a stupid move for him to be in when he already has a title. Paul eventually goes for the leg because why not? and we get some awesome work on it as Paul goes back to his roots as a super mean muscle head. He knocks Santana to the floor and follows him out, and yeah you guess it double fucking countout.
**1/2
JYD now gets a bye to the finals despite being a babyface and now forcing Randy to work again. Morons.
In the back, Hogan says he's going to finally put Piper down and end this for all the Hulkamaniacs
Match#13 Hulk Hogan (c) vs Roddy Piper (WWF World Championship)
They get right to it and fight on the outside with Piper taking a wicked bump over the rail and then getting his ass kicked some more by Hogan. Piper goes to the eyes like a little shit and we some wild punches and biting for a while, and it's good shit. He locks in a sleeper and Hogan's selling is awesome as he really dies on it and makes Piper look like a killer even more than he already is. Hulk fights back and wreaks his day for a while until Piper shoots him off into the ref. He gets a chair and smacks Hogan in the back with it, but Hogan gets it off him and beats the fuck out of him a couple of really good shots. He locks in a sleeper but Orton runs out and attacks for the DQ.
**3/4
Post match, they double team until Wonderful makes the save and cleans house and poses with his bff.
Match#14 Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs Dynamite Kid (Semifinals)
Liz is now in a stunning red dress. Wonderful battle for control to start with DK getting the best of it because of his speed, so Savage turns into a fight and both madmen throw some killer shots and bump around big. DK nails a sick superplex but Randy hooks the legs and cradles him to win.
**1/2
In the back, Gene speaks to Hogan. Hulk says everyone expected Piper to get it done tonight, but neither of them have had enough and Orton can get some to. He challenges them to round 3 in a tag match. Wonderful says they're always getting involved in their matches since Mania, and they're blood now and they're fighting together forever.
Match#15 Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs Junkyard Dog (Wrestling Classic Finals)
Liz is now wearing a purple dress. This is 9 minutes in our longest match of the night, but damn it JYD should never get that long. Randy works his ass off as best he can to make it work. From stooging and stalling for a while, to bumping big and finally beating JYD's head in when he gets a chance to. Gene joins commentary to talk about how amazing this show has been, and it feels like Vince tempting fate. JYD does nothing to add to this and it's super sad but very funny seeing how goddamn lazy and bad he. is. Savage has a fun control seg with lots of choking and cheating, and JYD sort of bothers to sell it. JYD fights back and Savage bumps his ass off again. JYD backdrops out of the ring onto the concrete in a crazy bump and he's knocked out cold and the ref counts him out to give JYD the win.
**1/2
Post match, Jesse storms the ring and screams this isn't fair after Savage had to wrestle more than anyone else in here, and JYD got to sit on his fat backside. He demands they reverse it, but he gets ignored and keeps ranting and raving.
This show was meant to be ran again in January as Vince figured it would be a hit as Mania was, but it did a disappointing 47,000 buys and the show was cancelled and never really bought up again in WWF/E history.
