According to a report from Fightful, Brian Cage has told those close to him that AEW picked up the option year on his contract.

Cage was reportedly surprised by this as he had been expecting his contract to expire. The report also said he believed he's among the top paid in the company.

In a Twitter reply to the story earlier Thursday, Cage acknowledged the rumor without confirming or denying:

His last match on AEW TV was a taped episode of Rampage that aired last October when he lost an FTW title bout to Ricky Starks. He also wrestled on the Jericho Cruise later that month, but none of those matches have made air.

He first signed with the promotion in early 2020. He won the Casino Ladder match at Double or Nothing that year in his first match with the promotion.

His last AEW TV match was an early-October 2021 Rampage episode where lost an FTW title bout to Ricky Starks. He also wrestled on the Jericho Cruise from October 22nd to 25th.

While he has not been active in AEW for months, Cage has been appearing on plenty of indie shows including Warrior Wrestling, Future Stars of Wrestling, Maryland Championship Wrestling, XPW and REVOLVER. Most recently, he wrestled in a tag match alongside KC Navarro in a losing effort to The Acclaimed at Warrior Wrestling 19.

Dude’s not a draw; I don’t see the point in keeping him

Here's hoping year 3 is kinder to him and we see him thrive more

How long before his wife tweets her frustration?

But this raises an interesting question…apparently he and his wife have expressed frustration and want out. They don’t think he’s being used correctly. AEW picks up his option year although he hasn’t been on TV in a while…

Isn’t this essentially what WWE is doing with Ali?

Dude isn’t happy, why keep him?

Has he? I know his wife has, but I’m not 100% sure he has. If he wants out I agree let him out of his contract. But I want to see him say it and confirm it himself he wants out.

Don't think he's outright said it himself . I'd be surprised if this wasn't a two way agreement myself

Cage is happy to have re-signed so no it is not like Ali at all lmao. He was liking tweets about being happy to stay. Just cause his wife mouthed off doesn't mean he is unhappy.

Interesting

Don’t see why you’d be happy to re-sign with a company that doesn’t use you but I’ll take your word

^ because he can still take any indy dates in the meantime. I know he was injured until likevq month or 2 ago as well so could be a case of just needs to be put in rotation. Time will tell

Same reason everyone that isn't being used in WWE isn't asking for their release I imagine, some like the consistent money more than they care about how they're used. Plus Cage is still allowed indy bookings and he works AAA so he isn't just sitting at home.

All hypothetically of course, I don't know his true feelings but it doesn't seem far fetched at all that he's fine with it

Pretty sure you can’t re-sign someone without them agreeing to it. If he didn’t wanna stay he’s tell them to bugger off I’m sure.

Is that how it works with an option? I thought with those it was up to the company. :lol But I’m not sure how contracts work lol
