A US high school district has stepped in to prevent one of its students taking a porn star to his prom after he ran a successful Twitter campaign to score an adult entertainer as a date.
Minnesota student Mike Stone sent nearly 600 tweets to adult entertainers asking if they'd be his date to the Tartan High School prom on May 12, reports The Daily Dot news website.
The 18-year-old looked to have scored himself his dream date, with two actresses accepting his invitation, before the administrator of a Minnesota community website informed Stone's school principal, who in turn informed his parents.
"He was saying that it's not a good thing to do that," Stone said of his principal's reaction. "I said, 'I was just doing it to see what actually happened.'
"He said I'm not in trouble but said I should get out of that stuff. He told me not to get into any more drama like this."
Stone's parents weren't so calm when they approached him about his plans.
"[My mum's] really mad about it," he said. "She's saying I embarrassed them now."
There was confusion about whether he would be allowed to take one or more of the actresses to the prom, before the school district stepped in and shut down the idea.
The school district superintendent, Patty Phillips, issued a statement saying that "this prom date will not be allowed to attend the Tartan prom as her attendance would be prohibited under Tartan's standard prom procedures and would be inconsistent with two school district policies," according to the Star Tribune.
A spokesperson for the district said Stone would face no punishment for his actions.
Describing himself simply as 'awesome' on his Twitter profile, Stone spammed hundreds of porn stars with messages like 'may 12 is my high school prom and i want to ask u to be my date' and 'hey lexi are u booked up on may 12?'
Entertainer Megan Piper, who told The Huffington Post she had missed out on her own high school prom, agreed to be Stone's date if he could get her to Minnesota.
"If you can get me there, then yes ," she tweeted.
"I thought it was really cute, and I thought it would make his night by saying 'yes'," she told The Huffington Post.
