Attention! Turkish democracy needs you!

After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city centre, which is planned to be demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police attacked the protesters violently with tear gas and water cannon, directly targeting their faces and bodies. Dozens of protesters are hospitalized and access to the park is blocked without any legal basis. Turkish media, directly controlled by the government or have business and political ties with it, refuse to cover the incidents. Press agencies also blocked the information flow.
Please share this message for the world to become aware of the police state created by AKP of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which is often considered to be a model for other Middle Eastern countries. Turkish democracy expects your help. Thank you!

These "peaceful demonstrations" seem to feature a lot of protestors with their faces wrapped in bandanas and dressed like complete thugs. I'm sure there's more going on here than what's being passed along.

Also, if the land has been purchased for development of this mall, that makes these people trespassers. And I don't know what caused a few of these people to bleed, but tear gas and water cannons are not "acts of violence" whatsoever.

I was told the same thing about Chinese Democracy. Eight years later it was just a god awful CD and the country hasn't progressed. I expect less payoff here.

Two sides to every story, and you guarantee that in every 'peaceful protest' theres alot of thugs looking for an excuse to start a fight. Even if the original intention is pure any protest will always include people looking for a fight.

Dispering a crowd with tear gas and water cannons is a pretty peaceful way to do it especially when there are that many people there. If the people aren't supposed to be on that land then they shouldn't really be there. Protestors lifting up bricks and pavers and hurling them at police would have then lead to a more forceful removal. I never understand why people destory property when rioting, all you are doing is screwing all the other citizens over since they will have to pay to have it restored through taxes.

Reading up about this park apparently they are rebuilding a former military barracks there that was situated on that exact location for nearly 150 years before being demolished. I haven't read anything that 100% confirms that a mall will be built inside those barracks.

They are hiding that fact. They are saying that "A path and road widing work will happen" These are lies. They try to hide the fact. 5-6 years ago in Istanbul there were lots of green fields, even our apartment's front but now it's all malls.

Why are they determined to destroy all the public parks? Just to get more revenue through land tax?

Are the current party popular these days? They were returned for a third term in 2011 which I think is the first time it had happend, with an increased percentage of the vote so from the outside looking in they seemed quite popular.

I did read about a strange new law brought in regarding drinking, something about banning the purchase and consumption(!?!) of alcohol between 22:00 and 06:00. I personally don't drink but even I find that to be a ridiculous law. That can't have been a popular move either.

They destroy it, they sell the area and they get money in their pocket. They got %50 of the votes in 2011. Now people have opened their eyes and they are awake. They know what's going on. But thre is some people who is with them also. That's because that guy, the prime minister is using the emotions of people who love their religion and their ancestors, Ottoman's. This guy is clever and foxy. He knows how to win. He abuse people's love for religion and Ottoman's. But we, the ones who realize what's going on, we are not going to let it happen.

Yeah, that new alcohol law had got lots of negative comments.

Those kind of alcohol laws happen all the time in Australia...amazingly enough. Not national laws but pubs/clubs/bottle-o's/etc. are closing earlier and earlier thesedays and even in mining towns they're doing all they can to stop people drinking.

Not to undermine the potential plight here but using all available land and dodgy politicians is a global thing. No country has anything near what could be called a good government.
