ABC Online said:
US sprinter Tyson Gay and Jamaican former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell have failed drug tests.
Powell confirmed the news in a statement released via his Twitter account in which he denied he ever knowingly or wilfully took any banned substances.

"I will confirm that a sample I gave at the National Trials in June has returned 'adverse findings'," said the 30-year-old.

"The substance oxilofrine was found, which is considered by the authorities to be a banned stimulant.

"I want to be clear saying to my family, friends and, most of all, my fans worldwide that I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules.

"I am not now nor have I ever been a cheat."

Powell, who has never won an individual global sprint title, held the 100m world record between 2005 and 2008 when his then-best of 9.74 seconds was broken by current record holder and fellow-Jamaican Usain Bolt

"This result has left me completely devastated in many respects," Powell said.

"Professionally, this finding fully negates any possibility of me being a part of Jamaica's contingent of athletes competing at (the) world championships in Moscow later this summer."

Powell, who was battling injuries earlier this year, failed to qualify for next month's Moscow world championships, finishing seventh in the 100.

He has since re-emerged as an elite sprinter, clocking 9.88 seconds earlier this month in Lausanne and raising speculation he could be added to Jamaica's 4x100 metres relay team.

Powell's agent, Paul Doyle, said there was no intent by Powell to use banned substances.

"We are working with WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) now on how it got in his system," he said by telephone.

Powell said he was "reeling from this genuinely surprising result".

"I accept the consequences that come with this finding -after all there is only one Asafa Powell," he said. "My fault here however is not cheating but instead not being more vigilant.

"I want to reiterate that in my entire career as an athlete I have never sought to enhance my performance with any substance. It is not a part of who I am or what I believe in."

Since the news broke, another representative for Powell took to his Twitter account to confirm that "the individual who gave Asafa the supplements room has now been raided.

"He has been detained by Italian Law Enforcement in conjunction with this matter. The investigations continue."

Meanwhile Gay, the fastest man to take to the track this year, said that while he would wait for the results of his B sample, he would accept any sanctions handed to him.

"I don't have a sabotage story... I basically put my trust in someone and was let down," he told the BBC.

"I know exactly what went on, but I can't discuss it right now.

"I hope I am able to run again, but I will take whatever punishment I get like a man."

The news comes just a month after Jamaica's Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown tested positive for a banned diuretic.

Even though it is a common occurence it is still disappointing when these top athletes are finally busted and test positive for drugs. It is good that they have been caught and punished immediately but still a shame that so many keep going for drugs to get that extra performance boost. I know that it is fanciful to think that athletics can eventually be completely clean but I really wish it was. No real surprise that both guys are trying to blame it on others rather than take responsibility themselves, they put it into their body so they should know what they are taking.

Honestly part of me does think there is something more to do. Afterall it seems like it's not just these too but Veronica campbell and a couple other jamaican athletes. Just seems strange that they are all getting busted one after the other. Still more fool them for putting trust in other people.

It's sprinting, is there any suprise anymore?

Methinks it's just a smokescreen to get to their ultimate goal....Usain Bolt. Unless NBC thinks he is worth too much and get WADA to stay off his ass like they got the IOC to do with Carl Lewis in the 80s.

It just sucks to me to see this happening. Sprinting is something I love to do. And to see these guys go down one after the other for this stuff... is just disheartening. makes you wonder who is really clean and like Deezy said... when will Bolt fail? Cause if he fails... really what's left?

Sucks. Remember Powell running a 9.77 into the wind at Gateshead when .77 was the world record. Loved watching him.

100m is my event. I'm a horrible middle/long distance runner but I used to run for my town in 100m. Used to have a big passion for watching all the events I could on TV but not done so for a good 4/5 years now.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't really have anything against the use of PEDs, if it makes normal men into supermen. All the more entertaining and fascinating to me.I know it sucks for amatuers thinking they need to do the same shit to compete, but as a casual viewer...I have no problem with it. It's not like I can take the same shit and what they do.

At the same time PEDs are not superpills that make you faster or stronger by just aking it. You still need the intense drive and work ethic. All they do is help the body heal faster so you can work even harder to get better at your chosen sport.

Again I lnow it's unfair for people who don't want to do PEDs, I get that. But nobody was watching Olympic Sprinting after Ben Johnson, until 96 When Michael Johnson and Donovon Bailey started breaking records. And that viewership wasn't as large as the 88(I think?) games

Difference being that even when Michael Johnson's teammates failed drug tests, he never did. I was a quarter miler so Michael Johnson was always my idol. I've watched his world record run so many times and just can't believe it's stood the test of time. I really do feel bad for both of them because the testing is so strict that sometimes, athletes do accidentally take banned substances. That being said, if there is any doubt that what you're taking is a banned substance, you have to get that checked before you use it. I'm disappointed in Gay more so than Powell since Gay has been an activist for anti-doping agencies.

I'm pretty sure Donovan Bailey didn't test positive for anything either. I don't remember hearing or reading anything like that.

Anyways, it's difficult to look back, it was steroids that were banned substances back then, there were still numerous things out there for helping you get big and strong. I personally don't think every steroid should be banned, cortizone would've saved Kurt Angles neck more than that novacaine did in that same Olympics.

Marion Jones was another that never failed a drug test and she doped like crazy.

If Bolt was found to be a drug cheat that would be a huge blow to the sport. I don't think that he is though, his body shape and size doesn't hint towards steroids like so many others do. He is much taller so doesn't have to stack on huge amounts on muscle to have the power required to go sub 10. Guys like Bolt and Christophe Lemaitre don't raise as much suspicion for me because of their body shapes, height is their weapon. The short guys that are built like bodybuilders are more suspect.
