Are horror movies "respected" by the public?

Alright well then what about Insidious then? A high grossing film, won some awards and got mostly positive critical review AND most of the people I know have seen it and like it.
Personally I thought it was pretty good, definitely better than Scre4m, but I wouldn't say it was all that memorable. Still, certainly an exception that helps to prove the rule.

Some critics might see it that way but that's only because no horror movie ever stands a chance at winning an Oscar or Golden Globe except for maybe an original score or something.
Speaking of exceptions to the rule, Silence of the Lambs won Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Adapted Screenplay...and it can be considered a horror movie. The Exorcist won Best Screenplay while Rosemary's Baby and Misery picked up Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress awards respectively.

The bottom line here is that horror films CAN be respected, it just doesn't happen all that often.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention the shout out to Idiocracy...I love that movie.
