People will argue with you but I wholeheartedly agree with you. Ever since the NHL introduced salary caps you're seeing teams you never thought would have a chance doing very well in the league because things are on a more level playing field.

People still watch Hockey? Really? Never knew. Hmmmm. Learn something new everyday.

And just for the record the Yankees payroll has been the highest for a LONG ass time and we haven't won a title since 2000 so you can't just go buy championships (not saying you said that but that is the consensus amongst most Yankee haters). The team still has to produce and gel and come together to win, whether it be the Yankees or any other team. The Mets have what I believe to be the 2nd highest payroll in MLB and suck year in and year out.

You would have a big bank roll as well if you won 27 championships... just saying. It's a cycle, they win because they have a great team, they have a great team because they can afford it, they can afford it because they win.

Don't hate on the Yankees... :)

I'm not hating on the Yankees, I'm hating on the notion that a team who has far more money to spend on players' salaries will generally do far better than a team that doesn't have anywhere near the funds that they have available.

Like the Yankees spent $200 million on players salaries this year, the Washington Nationals spent $60 million. How or why the Yankees have so much more to spend is irrelevant, it creates an uneven playing field that allows a team like the Yankees to snap up the best players without the other teams having a fair chance at them.

A salary cap more or less puts all teams on a level playing field. Look at the NHL's salary cap works: (2008 numbers)

For the 2008-09 season the NHL salary cap is $56.7 million. The minimum team payroll is $40.7 million.

This works to try and set a level playing field for all teams because it's not fair, nor interesting when one team can dominate the market by spending $200 million bucks.

All teams in bold were in playoffs this year. What really sucks is not that there is no salary cap (which there is a luxury tax which the Yankees pay into EVERY YEAR), what sucks is there is no minimum salary in MLB, owners want to make as much profit as possible and therefor try to save as much money as possible by cutting stars loose. Remember the Marlins winning it and then getting rid of everyone the next year just to save money and that my friend is cheating the fans. The Yankees pay in to the system and we as Yankee fans buy into the system and its a circle. You know that saying "You gotta pay to play" ??? Well if you not paying get the f*ck out of the game.

I totally agree that what the Marlins did was dirty and shows really poor respect for their fans but the luxury tax should be used to promote competitive balance between the rest of the teams. From what I understand it goes to promoting baseball growth over the planet and player benefits, which is nice and all, but again still not fair to smaller market teams because after all the only teams who are going to pay the luxury taxes are the ones who can already afford it.
