Lorraine Braco was penciled in to play Carmella and Steven Van Zandt was also pencilled in to play Tony but HBO executives wanted a actor who had experience so David Chase wrote Silvio's part for him, which I found interesting.

Hear me out actually. Tony could have had so few problems if he had just given Ralphie, Vito, Chris, Patsy, and Gigi their own crews.
Paulie gets the old Altieri crew, Patsy gets the old Junior crew, Chris gets Tony's crew, Ralphie gets the Aprile crew, and Gigi and Vito are given their own crews. Keep them far away from one another and you get:

Chris's Crew
Ralphie's Crew
Patsy's Crew
Paulie's Crew
Larry Barese's Crew
Gigi's Crew
and Vito's Crew
Bobby Baccala stays as Underboss, and Tony feeds orders through him. Silvio remains consigliere.

I dunno... wouldn't that may end up being more destructive than productive? Creating more smaller crews feels like it would make you more vulnerable to those crews trying to start their own shit etc.
