The fact that things are worse elsewhere is never a good argument for accepting something slightly shittier at home. that's called a logical fallacy
The fallacy of relative privation rejects an argument by stating the existence of a more important problem. The existence of such a worse issue, the fallacy insists, thereby makes the initial argument irrelevant. This fallacy is also known as the appeal to worse problems or “not as bad as”.

It is like saying "OH, what they are doing is bad, but not as bad as Hitler."

It doesn't change the fact that something is bad.

women don't need equal wages, they are treated worse in Africa (example). the 2nd part of the statement doesn't negate the fact that women don't have an equal wage. ergo, logical fallacy. there's unlimited examples of why this is bad. People need a level 1 critical thinking class as mandatory in high school and college tbh, they'd see through 95% of the bullshit "argument" people and especially politicians make (such as appeal to emotion, whataboutisms, etc)

Can't be any worse than folks who bring up a similar topic or not even a relatable topic to derail from the actual subject.

It tends to happen when folks can't actually debate the topic and prefer to pivot to something else to be either contrarian or go distract from the fact they can't actually argue it.

We call that "whataboutism". Those that do it constantly act like they've won the argument when they point that out. It's kinda sad tbh.

theres a few things people do, and no one is immune to it, hence why in real debates you are supposed to point out fallacies immediately and that argument is struck from the record.

the original version of whataboutism for ppl who care:

Tu quoque

I assume those folks can't walk and chew gum at the same time if they assume caring about one issue means you don't care about a different one that hasn't been brought up yet

One of my favorite examples was when the NBA players spoke out about George Floyd and they were like "what about starving kids in Africa, they just don't care about them?" Like what :lol if you speak out about one social issue you're then held accountable to make sure you acknowledge them ALL I guess :lmao

Exactly.

The only time it really works is if it's to point out a flaw in someone's argument regarding how they feel about an apple to Apple argument. A contradiction or what have you.

But just throwing it out there and making assumptions of the other person's argument is just plain bad debating skills. :hayden3

I can definitely admit I've done it in arguments before too, trying to point out people's hypocrisy in general just doesn't work out IMO. Everyone has some and is biased in ways, much better to try and communicate through it than get them with a "gotcha"

Another one that’s stupid is when people say “Well it’s always been like this.” And I’m like :pogba so we can’t be the ones who try and make a difference? Who try and make things better? It’s so dumb.
Oh my god preach.

If it's always been like this, why the fuck are you accepting the status quo instead of giving a shit and working to help bring awareness to the issue?

Is it because you don't actually care, or in fact are okay with the status quo? How pathetic that must be.
