It doesn't change the fact that something is bad.
women don't need equal wages, they are treated worse in Africa (example). the 2nd part of the statement doesn't negate the fact that women don't have an equal wage. ergo, logical fallacy. there's unlimited examples of why this is bad. People need a level 1 critical thinking class as mandatory in high school and college tbh, they'd see through 95% of the bullshit "argument" people and especially politicians make (such as appeal to emotion, whataboutisms, etc)
Can't be any worse than folks who bring up a similar topic or not even a relatable topic to derail from the actual subject.
It tends to happen when folks can't actually debate the topic and prefer to pivot to something else to be either contrarian or go distract from the fact they can't actually argue it.
We call that "whataboutism". Those that do it constantly act like they've won the argument when they point that out. It's kinda sad tbh.

One of my favorite examples was when the NBA players spoke out about George Floyd and they were like "what about starving kids in Africa, they just don't care about them?" Like what

The only time it really works is if it's to point out a flaw in someone's argument regarding how they feel about an apple to Apple argument. A contradiction or what have you.
But just throwing it out there and making assumptions of the other person's argument is just plain bad debating skills.
