Another review time, i've been thinking about this one long and hard. So I decided to not do an N64 Platforming game (though those are my favourite) and choose something else I love, Timesplitters.
These games were made the 2000's and were very underrated, owning all 3 of the trilogy myself, I can tell you they only got better with each game. So i'm going to review the peak that was Timesplitters: Future perfect.
Gameplay: The gameplay is reminiscent of Goldeneye on the N64, except this time you have 2 analog sticks which helps greatly with aiming and moving. You can swap guns using the left D-pad (on PS2) and each gun has a secondary and primary fire. I.E Plasma Rifle, shoots with primary and shoots a grenade launcher as a secondary fire.
You also get a nifty device called an Uplink, which allows you to view objectives, lift things up and change the settings of the game. This comes in helpful with alot of puzzles throughout the course of the single player (This feature isn't in multiplayer)
It also features a few boss battles scattered through out the game, which are challenging and on the harder difficulties down right impossible for newer gamers. It also features splitscreen co-op so you and buddy can take on the Timesplitters together.
Not only that but the game features alot of multiplayer modes from "Capture the Bag" to the standard Team Deathmatch and variants of that. One of the more entertaining ones is "Virus" in which one player starts off with the virus, then has to infect others by simply touching them. It's fun with a friend or two, especially turning weapons and the map off.
This game has a ton of replay ability not only in the Arcade mode, which see's you take on different objectives in a time limit, but the better you do, unlocks you extra characters and weapons. (my personal favourite challenge being the one where you have to brick in windows, in the time limit to unlock bricks as weapons for the multiplayer) The campaign also unlocks characters for doing it on the harder difficulties.
Fear not, because the Multiplayer has bots too, so even if you don't have a friend round, you can put on bots (with adjustable difficulty) and try crazy games types out. I forgot to mention above that you can change the bots to whoever you want and you can also change pretty much all the setting for each gametype and you can customize the weapons too. (If you want a Fire Extinguisher only Deathmatch, you can)
Sound: Usually i'd just put that the music is good and it can't be improved. during the campaign i'd this is true, however the music in the multiplayer levels can get repetative, but just like Timesplitters 2, you can change the music to whatever you like so that's all good.
Story: The game begins in 2401 when the space marine, Sergeant Cortez, is leaving the space station that he destroyed at the end of TimeSplitters 2. His ship crash lands on the future Earth and two fellow marines greet him. Sergeant Cortez follows his squad of marines through the valley and battles unknown masked figures and TimeSplitters. Cortez is then tasked with following the signatures in the past by time travel thought to be caused by the TimeSplitters. He then goes on a mission to go back in time to find a way to stop the TimeSplitters race from being created.
The characters are funny and the plot is well written (even though it's physically impossible). You'll find yourself growing attached to Cortez, his bouts of humor making you laugh. Especially when he has to interact with other characters, one inpaticular is a James Bond parody called Harry Tipper, you play through a level with him and Cortez infiltrating a Bond Villain-esque style secret lair.
The Negatives:
-Lack of Proper online
-Custom Soundtrack would be nice
-Some of the challenges could be easier
-Storyline whilst written well, paradoxes on the first level.
Overall I'd give it a 9/10, with the fact this game was released before proper online was introduced, so ultimately I can't grade it a 10.
