I'll start my first review with a game I like for the N64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, I will cutting the review down into a few sections. Gameplay, Sound, Story and The bad stuff.
Gameplay: The gameplay is a mix of Zelda/Mario so it's an action adventure platforming game. For the most parts the puzzles are easy, you just time jumps or use each characters different ability to move the object. (In example, you use Goemon's strength power up to move Big Steel blocks, Yae's Mermaid powers to swim underwater), Now you don't start the game with these you have to do a minigame to get them, which can be a fun break from the main game itself. You also unlock the other 3 main characters as you progress through the story, so you do have to play through abit to be able to get to control which one you like.
Now to one of the main parts of the gameplay; The boss battles, there are two types of bosses (which I will post Video's of at the end of this review). The first is a normal on foot boss battle, which on the most part requires you to dodge it's attacks and then attack when the boss is weak. Fun and challenging each boss has a different strategy. Then we get to the Impact battles, you control a giant robot that looks like the main character, then you have to fight another giant robot, the controls are simple and it's fun punching a giant robot.
As with Zelda and Mario, there are castles you have to go through and each one is packed with upgrades and puzzles for certain characters. you have to go around collecting keys to unlock doors to get closer to the boss. Simple stuff and it even has a map showing where you have and haven't been.
Sound: The music in this game is amazing, every piece feels like it fits the situation and whilst you're in the castles. the deeper in you get, the music changes subtly adding different beats to the same song. The character sounds are good too, with each character blurting out different Japanese noise when they get hit or get a power up.
Story: The story revolves around the Peach mountain shogun in their giant floating space peach, turning the world into a giant stage, with their instant stage beam, after saving the king of Edo castle, he tells you to go after them and stop them so you chase them down through different area's until you eventually save Japan from them. It's a simple plot that get slightly developed after awhile, which is good enough for a game like this. The dialog for this game can sometimes be quite hilarious.
The Negatives: This game isn't perfect and i'm one to admit this with open arms so below, I shall list what I feel brings this game down for me.
- Camera can be a fussy and annoying.
- Jumps have to be timed to perfection alot of the time.
- Sometimes you can feel lost and have no idea what to do (you can visit a hint giver, but you shouldn't need too)
- Some of the bosses feel too easy (you can beat the first boss without moving)
- Goemon's Mini game can be frustrating
- Story never feels more than just something in the background
Overall I'd give it a 7/10, whilst a fun action platformer, it needed abit more story development and it would have been a classic.
This theme is also a very memorable part of the game!
