It is better to have personal, direct motivations for most storylines, but it's a crapshoot when someone's returning from an absence.

Everybody knew Reigns was coming back and it became a situation where bringing him back could serve a number of purposes. In this case, bringing him back as a "sheriff" (think Austin coming out to save Stephanie...no real justification in-character, except that he was a good guy "doing the right thing", which was my point here all along).

So which is it, exactly? Story structure of a crap shoot? Good vs. Evil isn't good writing and all of the writers you list would tell you the same. It's lazy. Kind of like insulting people rather than providing a coherent argument.

This is one of those things were it's like "okay, whatever, he helped the good guy." Descent writing would have had us screaming "Oh my God! That's so awesome!"
