[Wrestlemania XXX - Extreme Rules 2014]
Following Wrestlemania after it had been announced that various members of the roster had been signed by both RAW and Smackdown, one of these names was Corey Graves who had been drafted to Smackdown. With another notable name being none other than the NXT Women’s Champion Paige and the NXT Champion Adrian Neville. Unlike the two champions though, it would be Corey Faves who would appear on the first episode of NXT following Wrestlemania (April 10). Graves would reveal that he had signed a deal to appear on both Smackdown and NXT, but that he was recognised officially as being a member of the Smackdown roster. This, Graves would explain, made him one of the most valuable players that NXT got to use week in and week out. It would also be Graves who would be given the privilege of announcing that NXT would host its very own exclusive supercard events that would work very much in the same way that pay per views work for the RAW and Smackdown and thus unveil the concept of TakeOver.
Graves would then go on to explain that being such an integral member of the roster, he would need an opponent of equal strength and measure. An opponent that would actually be able to offer up some sort of challenge for him. Before anything else could be said, Graves would be interrupted by young talent Travis Tyler who would make it clear that he didn’t understand the reasoning behind Graves signing and that despite being a rookie he was more than capable of seeing off Graves. Corey however would simply dismiss Tyler, and make it clear that if Tyler wanted to even be put in the same ring he was going to have to cut his teeth first.
The following week (April 17th) NXT General Manager William Regal would be bombarded by Travis Tyler, with it being clear that the young rookie wanted his chance to prove himself. Regal would make it clear that as much as he welcomed Tyler’s fighting spirit, that he would have to prove himself before he was going to put him in the same ring as Graves. Tyler would be agreeable to prove himself, as long as at the end of the road Graves would be waiting for him. Regal would make it clear that he couldn’t make promises, but that there was another young man in a similar position to him. A young man going by the name of Troy McLain. Regal would suggest that Tyler team up with McLain in a tag-team match next week.
Tyler would team up with Troy, (April 24th) with the team being repackaged as ‘The Two Ts’ with both men having the letter T emblazoned on their shirts. The duo would claim a victory over Clayton Jack and Sam Johnson, in a fairly convincing manner and that pair looked to have worked well together but also seemed to have natural chemistry.
During the same episode of NXT, Graves would wrestle on the brand for the first time since his signing to Smackdown against Sylvester LeFort in a match where Corey Graves would look dominant throughout most of the spells, before being caught out by a stiff punch to the jaw which would seem to annoy Graves. So much so in fact that rather than continue fighting, Corey would simply exit the ring and walk to the back being counted out by the referee. It was clear however, that LeFort was less than pleased in the manner in which he had won the contest.
The next week the new partnership of ‘The Two T’s’ would team up once more (May 1st) this time being pitted against a slightly more challenging pairing of Sawyer Fulton and Mojo Rawley for the second time in as many weeks with both McLain and Tyler continuing to look impressive with people wondering if this management built pairing could actually prove to be really fruitful on NXT.
Two weeks following Wrestlemania (April 17th) Aiden English would appear on NXT and proceed to cut a promo in the ring, in which he would announce that after much searching and deliberating that he had found the most perfect partner not only to tag team with, but also to understand the world with in a totally platonic manner of course. This would lead to Simon Gotch make his next debut, with English further announcing that Gotch would make his in-ring debut tonight. Gotch would complete his debut by claiming victory over Danny Burch, which would be done in a totally illegal manner as English would distract the referee allowing Gotch to low blow Burch, before rolling Burch into the rollup for the win. The match ending really helped paint a picture of just exactly what sort of tag team English and Gotch were doing to be.
A fortnight later (May 1st) Burch would have cut a pre-recorded segment demanding he get the chance to teach English a lesson for getting involved in his business. However, just like the previous encounter it would be English who would distract the referee as Simon Gotch in a throwback to Regal would pull a pair of brass knuckles and knock Burch out cold before exiting the ring allowing English to pick up the victory, with the referee being left totally clueless by the foul play that had led to the win.
General Manager William Regal would make it very clear (10th April) to the NXT roster that following a number of a recent departure with some being full-time and others on a joint basis, that opportunities had now been created and this would be a really good chances for various members of the roster to prove themselves not only to him, but to the WWE Universe that they had what it took to be considered as being some of the best talent of the future. Over the next four weeks three men would really stand out and impress, with these men being Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze and Camacho. It was very clear that in the absence of NXT Champion Adrian Neville, these three men were very much being showcased as the best that the brand had to offer. With the scheduled TakeOver even looming over the horizon, and Adrian Neville yet to have appeared on the brand since being signed to RAW there were some real questions about what this would mean in terms of ownership of the NXT Championship.
The Ascension had been in possession of the NXT Tag Team Championships for over seven month, and the pairing would make it clear following Wrestlemania weekend (April 10th) that they very much had their eyes set on bigger and better teams, and had taken it almost as a personal insult that neither RAW or Smackdown had shown any interest them in. The duo would make it clear that the rejection had very much become the catalyst to inspire them to become one of the greatest tag teams that the WWE Universe had ever seen. They would take out their frustration that night by making light work of Enzo Amore and Big Cass and very much putting the entire roster on notice that they very much were the best team in the entire division.
Following the news from the episode RAW earlier in the week in which Team Lucha (Kalisto & Rey Mysterio) would become number one contenders for the World Tag Team Championships, The Ascension would follow this up by shooting on Kalisto in a pre- recorded segment (April 17th) making it clear that everyone knew that Mysterio was the only reason that Team Lucha had earned the title shot and that Kalisto didn’t weigh up. Konnor would make the point that Kalisto had never even challenged for the NXT titles and would imply that Kalisto was scared of The Ascension. Kalisto would wrestle with Dallas that night on NXT, but Viktor and Konnor would provide too much distraction that would end up costing Kalisto the win.
Kalisto and for the first time Rey Mysterio would appear on NXT the following week (April 24th) and Rey would make it clear that Kalisto had the potential to be one of the greatest luchadores of all time and that was why he had taken him underneath his wing. He was going to guide him to greatness, one step at a time. Mysterio would make it clear that the Ascension were nothing but a distraction and that Team Lucha were very much focused on The Uso, but after they became the World Tag Team Champions they would return to NXT and be back to answer all the questions that the Ascension might have for them.
In order to add an element of prestige and further excitement about the TakeOver, William Regal would announce (April 17th) that a tournament exclusive to the women of NXT would take place, with the final of said tournament taking place at the event with the winner being granted a future shot at the NXT Women’s Championship. Regal would further add that current champion Paige would also be entered into the tournament and that if she were to win - then she would have the privilege of choosing her future number one contender. The six full time members of the roster would be officially confirmed as being part of the tournament (Alexa Bliss, Bayley, Charlotte, JoJo, Paige & Sasha Banks) but Regal would make it clear that various talent on provisional contracts or working out of the Performance Center would be given a change to feature in the competition. Two tune up matches would take up prior to the competition to officially begin, with Charlotte claiming a victory over JoJo, whilst Paige would defeat Alexa Bliss.
The following week (April 24th) would see four women being added to competition, with Regal announcing they would count as qualifying matches. The four women would be revealed as Sarah Backman, Shaul Gurrerro, Rachelle Walker and Emeraude. The first qualifying match would see Sarah Blackman claim a fairly convincing victory over young development talent Emeraude.
The second qualifier would take place the following week (May 1st) with Rachelle Walker and Shaul Gerrero having a close encounter, but with Walker claiming the win. Following the match, a bracket would be set up that would begin the following week. Regal would wish everyone the best of luck, especially to Paige who was current a double champion and would be defending the WWE Women’s Champion at Extreme Rules on the weekend coming.
